Dawson County gins report a total of 85 115 bales as the 1978 ginning season winds down. Weather has been favorable in December despite a dry year with only 19.31 inches of rainfall for the year. Many fields are already fallowed for winter.
County officials reviewed the Texas Commission on Jail Standards report listing 47 areas of non compliance at the Dawson County Jail. Sheriff Horton and Judge Pratt discuss fixes including a written fire escape plan while a grant earmarked for the county was reported lost. The board approved applying for surplus item purchases to address some inspection items.
Lamesa Floral Company at 609 S. 4th will change owners January 1 as Paul and Jo Crow take over from Mrs. Early Peltier who has run the business since 1977. Peltier stays on in a limited training role to assist the Crows and other staff. The firm, bought by the Peltiers in 1945, keeps its name retaining the tradition of service in a remodeled building with expanded showroom and new greenhouse added in 1971.

The DEBT program in Lamesa, part of eight LISD outreach efforts funded by a three year grant, identifies and intervenes for children with disabilities from birth to age two. Volunteers plus a few paid staff visit homes weekly or monthly to engage children in activities that develop walking and talking skills while involving parents, especially mothers, in weekly routines.
