PUC approves GTE rate rise with service penalty in Texas

The Public Utility Commission granted General Telephone Company of the Southwest a 35.1 million rate increase, about half of the requested amount, and imposed a 4 million penalty for poor service. Implementation is delayed to Oct 1. Lamesa basic monthly bill rises 85 cents to 7.15. business rate to 19. An investigation into compliance with service regulations was ordered, with possible revocation of authority to operate if found noncompliant.

Lamesa schools rely on community support and steady reforms

Neal Chastain, CEO and superintendent of Lamesa Independent School District, leads a system with 2900 plus students, 428 employees and a $4.2 million yearly budget. He notes enrollment down from 3400 but state funding up with migrant student percentages rising to 18 percent, while praising teachers, students, and community involvement as core strengths guiding curriculum continuity and cost efficiency.

County to weigh remodel of Howard College building

Dawson County commissioners meet Monday to discuss remodeling the county owned Howard College building to serve as the Tax Appraisal District office. They will review financing options and rent estimates as the district begins a full county wide reappraisal on January 1. Also on the agenda are a Getty Oil pipeline crossing request, accounts payable, County Judge reports, future meeting notices, and whether to keep or update donated USCA Law Books. The court will convene at 10 a.m. in the County Judge's office.

Six collisions mar Lamesa traffic on Thursday and Friday

Lamesa saw twelve vehicles involved in six separate wrecks over Thursday and Friday. Early Thursday two crashes near noon left two drivers with towed cars, Georgia W. Shilling and Carroll Leroy Jarrett, in a Torino and an Oldsmobile. Later incidents included a Derington GMC pickup clash on Lynn Avenue, a K-Bob's lot mishap, and a S. 2nd Street hit-and-run with an El Camino. Friday saw a Mustang and Britt Trucking Ford collide near N.5th and Canyon, and a Western Oil Mack truck incident on Bryan Avenue with a Raul Echavarria Chevy.
