North Main Street drivers face four way stop signs at North 7th and Main starting Monday. City council authorized the plan, the second four way stop in Lamesa, with North 4th and Elgin already using the system and talks of signals at North 14th and Main.
Area districts announce August start dates for Borden County Sands O Dunnell Klondike Lamesa and Dawson schools with in service for teachers and immunization reminders. Kindergarten and new first graders must bring immunization records birth certificates and prior transcripts. Back to school shopping highlighted as football season gears up.
Plains Cotton Growers Inc and Lubbock Cotton Exchange project Dawson County will yield 200000 bales, second to Lubbock County's 285000. The region expects nearly ten percent of Plains total while noting August and September temperatures will affect fiber quality. Acreage totals 250000 in Dawson, 2400000 across 25 counties with market prices yet to firm.
The Lamesa School District Board of Equalization closed week long hearings with 481 property owners or reps discussing values with Southwestern Appraisal. A tenants committee urged broad reductions: 25–35% commercial, 20–30% farm land, 15–20% residential. Farm land forms due by 5 p.m. Monday to be considered.
Faustino Castanieda Vasquez, 21, is sentenced to 99 years for the Feb 4 slaying of Juanita High, 31. The jury deliberated two hours before the verdict. his brother Ray drew a similar sentence earlier. Vasquez testified the death was an accident. autopsy showed the victim was run over by a car multiple times. Sentencing was postponed 10 days. a motion for a new trial may be filed. Defense sought a change of venue. request denied. Court page 2.
Entry blanks for the Dawson County 4 H Little Britches Rodeo are due by Monday 8 p m. Mrs. Troy Howard handles entries and fees. Events span pee wee junior and senior groups with races roping calf riding and bull riding. Buckles and ribbons honor top places with proceeds benefiting the county 4 H activity fund.
Rev. R A Steinbronn of Grace Lutheran Church says a second Vietnamese family will arrive Monday and live on a farm 17 miles south of Lamesa where M W Richards hires. The family includes My Mguyen his wife two sons aged 9 and 10 and a 16 year old nephew. The congregation sponsors this arrival while the first family was sponsored by the city of Lamesa and employed a construction engineer.
