Lamesa City halts Energas rate hike for 120 days

The Lamesa City Council voted to suspend Energas 18.5 percent rate increase for 120 days delaying any higher gas charges until at least January. The move allows Energas customers in 63 West Texas cities to review the proposal and negotiate. Mars said the boost would raise a typical residential bill about $5.61 monthly for 107 000 cubic feet yearly usage.

Texas Plastics to open branch in Lamesa

Texas Plastics Industries Inc announces a Lamesa branch opening planned to start in two to three weeks with about 25 local jobs. President Jack Hauke says the Midland based firm will move three large machines and add three more in September if production meets expectations. The plant will run three shifts making thread protectors for oilfield pipe and drill stems, with local hiring except for a single plant manager moving from Midland.

Hance Hosts Noon BBQ in Andrews to Launch Campaign

Congressman Kent Hance returns to his 19th district for a Thursday noon barbecue in Andrews held by the Kent Hance for Congress Committee. The event marks the kickoff of his re election bid. tickets are $10 at the door for residents of Lamesa and Dawson County.

Airport manager dispute continues at Lamesa Municipal Airport

The Lamesa Municipal Airport Board plans a 10 am Wednesday meeting at the Chamber of Commerce with Johnson Flying Service owners Mrs. Larue Johnson and Don Lybrand and their attorney to settle management disputes. A short 90 day vacancy notice was mailed after JFS contract expiration, with a reminder to pay regular rates for the occupied property south of the apron. The board will also meet Thursday at 8 am at the airport to review proposed construction of five or six new hangars starting a second row near the JFS tanks and to develop a long range airport plan.

Lubbock Teen Arrested After Motorcycle Chase ends in Crash

Ricky Don Stephens 17 was arrested after a pursuit that started on the Lubbock highway and ended with the motorcycle overturning near South 4th and Main. He faces charges of fleeing from an officer reckless driving speeding and driving without a motorcycle license with a 30 day jail sentence probated for one year. The other rider fled and later surrendered. the bike had been on an extended test drive and not stolen.

Back-to-school edition to be published Sunday

The annual back-to-school edition of the Press-Reporter will be published this Sunday, per publisher Walter Buckel. It will include class schedules, curriculum changes, and information about Lamesa, Dawson, Klondike, Sands, Borden County and O'Donnell districts, plus a sports outlook and bargains from local merchants. The deadline for ads and copy is noon Friday.
