Hood County News publisher preserves old Granbury edition

No Boll Weevils In Area In April Traps Empty

Reports from the U S Department of Agriculture APHIS indicate boll weevil traps from the Borden County line through Patricia and Andrews to Eunice NM remain empty. Local USDA rep John Meekma says the area is usually slow to show infestation but this year may be no worse than before. Traps are bright yellow cones with pheromone jars set along roadsides. Some counties report weevils but not yet in the area.

Area Schools Plan Start Dates for Fall Term

Area districts announce first days of school with in service sessions for teachers. Lamesa opens August 22 with a weekend gap. Dawson and Borden County start August 18 while in service runs August 18. Klondike begins August 21 and in service August 13. Ackerly teachers return August 11 to 15 with students August 18.

Texas license plate collector keeps history alive in Lamesa

Manuel Vargas-Premier Collector M F Vargas has about 5 000 old plates and a hobby that spans Texas and beyond. He shares how Texas plates evolved since 1908 and notes his four antique cars and a vast array of tools, farm implements, Indian artifacts, and newspapers at his Dawson County home.

Vietnamese Arrive Sunday in Lamesa Community Welcome

Lamesa to receive its first Vietnamese family Sunday around noon at Lubbock Airport. Grace Lutheran Church will greet the three member family from a refugee camp in Arkansas. Xuong Vinh Thai, former Saigon construction engineer 1967 to 1975, will work in the city Water Department. His wife and year old son accompany him. wife speaks fluent English. A second Vietnamese family is expected soon.
