Chastain Named Lamesa Superintendent After Board Meeting

Neal Chastain 41, principal of Lamesa High School, chosen to succeed Alvin Cannady as Lamesa Independent School District superintendent. He will sign a three year contract, with confirmation at the next public meeting. Chastain has prior roles including assistant principal and principal at Lamesa, and has Tec Tech ties plus a family in local education. He succeeds Cannady who resigns to become Administrative Dean at Midland Community College.

Gregory Portland Advances Past Lamesa In State Volley Finals

Gregory Portland defeated Lamesa in straight sets at the state tournament in Austin, 15 10 and 15 11, ending the Lamesa offense led by Cindi Sellers and Cindy Barron with seven points apiece. Portland advances to face Channelview Richardson in the AAA finals at 2:45 PM Saturday.

Clean-Up Campaign Scheduled May 4-12

Lamesa launches a community clean-up May 4 to May 12 with residents urged to place light furniture boxes and similar bulky but easy to handle items in alleys for city pickup. Two extra trucks will operate in shifts to cover alleys as clubs take assigned areas and focus on alleys while avoiding heavy tree trunks to ease handling.

Hail and downpour strike Dawson County area

Severe weather dumped hail reportedly golf-ball size in the southwest Lamesa region and ice pellets near Seminole Road. Windows shattered, glass firms saw brisk business as roofs and storm doors damaged. Rainfall ranged from .10 to over an inch with up to 5.25 inches this year at the Cable TV tower. Farmers expect moisture to aid early cotton planting within ten days if soils warm.

Lawsuit filed over non reinstatement of teacher aide

Mr and Mrs Israel Ybanez filed in 106th District Court against Lamesa Independent School District over the non reinstatement of Lucia Ybanez as a South Elementary teacher aide after an emergency operation. The suit alleges she returned March 7 to find no job, with no written discharge notice or valid reason. Board policy allows sick leave and 30 days emergency leave, so reinstatement was denied but the first available aide position offered. COURT PAGE 2.

O Donnell High Names Top Seniors for 1973

O Donnell High School announces Baccalaureate on May 20 at 8 p.m. and commencement on May 24 at 8 p.m. in the school auditorium. Honor graduates include valedictorian Pamela Allen with 92.36, salutatorian Connie Kizer with 90.12, and top-ranked Robby Vestal with 89.28.

Klondike Flower Grove School Consolidation Vote Set

Voters in Klondike and Flower Grove districts head to the polls Monday to decide a consolidation. If approved in both Dawson and Martin counties the new Klondike Consolidated Independent School District would cover large areas with a combined tax base of about 24.4 million dollars and ADA totaling 420. Both districts report slight declines in enrollment. Klondike ADA 297 and Flower Grove ADA 123 last year. Polls open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Klondike School Building with presiding judge Jesse Stephens and alternate J D Smith.
