City and school races near election day with little voter interest. Community groups promote National FHA Week and April Crusade for cancer awareness. Selective Service consolidates with Big Spring, keeping local draft board in operation for Borden Dawson and Gaines counties.
Texas local draft offices will transfer to the Big Spring Federal Building as the Selective Service consolidates. The state will drop from 107 local boards to 63 by year end and reduce Texas staff from 42 to 193 full time positions and 27 part time roles.
Lamesa trustees approved teaching an elective Bible course at the high school and promoted Central Elementary’s principal to North Elementary. They kept the grooming policy, discussed middle school reorganization, and heard a parent request to change hair rules. A one year trial for the Bible course was approved amid debate over openness and controversy.
Bethel Fulbright Smiley Strahan Harris Laughlin each express reasons for seeking three open board seats. They address the Middle School, progressive education, teacher pay, system priorities, federal programs and other topics they wish to discuss.
A one day swine producers symposium is set for Wednesday at 9 30 a m at the Forrest Park Community Center. Topics include grain outlook protein supplements pasture use housing systems and hog market prospects with Dr Gilbert Hollis Dr William B Thomas Dr Billy R Stewart and Marvin Sartin among the speakers.
The Lamesa City Council meets Monday at 7 p.m. in regular session to consider a three item agenda. Avery Doss and other parents seek financial help to build two softball fields for the Girls Softball Association. Carroll Lee is to discuss the city's circular ordinance and an ordinance on first reading annexing property of Eland Crawley Noret and Palmore at North 14th Street east of Dallas Ave.
