Irrigation Boom Drives Southeastern Colorado Growth
The National Editorial Association tour visits Lamar and Kiowa and Prowers counties, highlighting vast arid lands turned productive by irrigation. Promoters led by W. M. Wiley plan a 30 mile long chain of lakes to irrigate 100000 acres, with water rights costing about 12 per acre and annual ditch maintenance of 24 per 80 acres. The Santa Fe railroad backs regional progress as melons and cantaloupes from Lamar showcase the bounty.
