Railroad Tragedy: Seven Killed In Oklahoma Train Crash
A twenty mile west of Tuttle Oklahoma work train collision killed seven crew members and injured at least fourteen when a fifteen ton rock crushed the caboose. Conductor J R Gamble Engineer Nazor and Fireman W H Evans led the relief effort as injured workers were taken to Little Rock and St Vincent's infirmary.

Colorado Southern Purchase Ties Gates Syndicate to Rail Line
Chicago reports that John W. Gates John J. Mitchell and Isaac Ellwood have acquired a controlling interest in the Colorado & Southern Railway. The line runs from Denver to Texline with 356 miles and 785 miles of branches, totaling 1,142 miles. The Gates group also controls Denver & Fort Worth and half of Colorado Midland, with Rio Grande Western owning the other half of Midland. The Colorado Fuel & Iron Company mines and plants lie on the Colorado & Southern and Denver & Rio Grande routes.

No Light for Statue of Liberty Torch goes out
New York reports the Liberty torch at Bedloe Island in upper New York Bay will be permanently extinguished around March 1, 1902. The beacon has dimmed since Bartholdi gifted the statue to the United States. A treasury lighthouse board notice cites lack of congressional funds as the reason for discontinuation.

Oil Resumed at McKenzie Well with Tank Car Shipment
Pumping resumed at the McKenzie well in Bouler Colorado with a steady four barrels per hour. Oil will be pumped into a tank car for shipment to the Florence refinery on Monday. Elkton directors join Columbia Crude Oil Company to drill in Florence district for mine fuel. First well sinking contracted. Light flow found at 75 feet in a Meeteetse water well. Oil bubbles observed on the Gunnison river near Delta.

Fight in Streets of Trieste Ends in Bloodshed
In Trieste on February 15 a Piazza Grande meeting of 4000 strikers ended in street clashes. Rioters attacked troops with stones as a lieutenant was wounded. the soldiers fired, killing six. Police dispersed the mob with swords as additional injuries were reported.

Cannibals massacre French scientific mission in New Guinea
M Rouyer survives a massacre of a French scientific expedition off Sileraka New Guinea on January 11. The cannibals killed 32 and mutilated corpses including Baron Villars Count de Saint Remey and M Hagenbeck Vries while Rouyer and Dr Forster were wounded and rescued at dawn.

Shipwrecked Savernake Crew Reaches San Francisco
The British bark Savernake with captain Frederick J. Toole and eighteen crew members wrecked November near the Isle of Clement Homere in the Society Islands. After months afloat and a failed land trek for help, they were rescued and brought to Papeete and finally San Francisco via Manga Reva and the gunboat Zelee arriving January 21.

Collision kills two in rear-end train crash near Litchfield
In Litchfield Illinois on February 17 the Diamond Special of the Illinois Central and a freight train collided rear end at about twelve miles per hour. Two people died and five were injured though no passengers were hurt. The freight engine and two Pullman coaches wrecked with heavy damage. Fog reduced visibility to under 100 feet according to the freight engineer.

Religious services held for suffrage at First Presbyterian
