Peckham Nomination Rejected by Senate Amid Party Clash

The senate rejected W. H. Peckham of New York for associate justice of the U S Supreme Court after a bitter contest led by Senator Hill. The vote deepens the rift within the Democratic party and is seen as a blow to the party ahead of the next elections. C B Thoman was appointed Register of the U S Land Office in Lamar and Ezra C Nowels of Baca county became Receiver. Thoman, a longtime Democrat and district court clerk, is expected to perform faithfully. Nowels, a former county judge and past state senate nominee, is regarded as well qualified and affable.
