Irish Land Bill Introduced By British Government
London March 27 The Irish secretary Wyndham introduced the governments land bill in the House of Commons proposing a 60 million dollar free grant for the bill. Tenants would pay 3 percent interest on government loans and advances capped at 2500 in congested areas and 5000 elsewhere. The measure calls for selling untenanted farms to neighboring tenants and creating three estate commissioners under the lord lieutenant to supervise sales with a new 30 year redeemable 2 percent stock to raise cash. The bill takes effect November 12. The scene drew Irish clerics and politicians with Redmond and Campbell Bannerman shaping reaction while Davitt celebrated his 57th birthday by reentering the chamber to hear the plan.
