Newport lifeguard memorial statue planned for Balboa Pier

Ben Carlson, Newport lifeguard who drowned July 6, may be honored with a 9 foot bronze statue at Balboa Pier next summer. The plan, designed by his brother in law, includes an educational element on ocean safety and private donations to fund the project. Carlson family also runs a foundation offering scholarships and safety programs.
