Researchers tag young sharks along North D C coast

Marine biologist Chris Lowe and Shark Lab at Cal State Long Beach tag seven juvenile great white sharks off Sunse Beach and Surfside beaches in a Huntington Beach led project with students and lifeguards. Pups, about five feet, are fitted with transmitters as researchers map movement from Ventura to San Onofre and study early births and stingray prey dynamics along the coast.

Rip current prompts mass rescue by Newport lifeguards

A strong rip current near 18th Street in Newport Beach pulled about ten swimmers out to sea on Monday afternoon. Lifeguards, including a rescue boat team, brought the group to safety within about 100 yards offshore. One swimmer was treated and released. the incident followed a Memorial Day beach warning due to 3 to 5 foot waves and rip currents along the coast.
