Patriot Day Parade honors fighter pilot with long service record
At the 51st Patriots Day Parade in Laguna Beach the community honored veterans including a Marine Corps Vietnam and Desert Storm veteran who rose from private to major squadron commander. Also recognized were Anna and Makenzie Fischer, Olympic water polo champions, and local seniors, with Thurston Middle School eighth grader Claire Tigner winning an essay contest. The veteran recalled enlisting two weeks after Pearl Harbor and described a perilous 1943 Ploesti bombing mission that left 440 airmen dead or captured and 53 B-24s destroyed, noting the sacrifice helped cripple Germany’s air power.
