Yacht Club Gears Up For Year End Regatta And Toy Lunch
Dana Point Yacht Club prepares for a busy Saturday with its annual Year End Regatta and a luncheon that brings Santa and toys to Marine families. The Marine holiday party benefits 53 children and 28 families tied to the 5th Marine Regiment. Barbara Merriman leads the event now, a tradition started a decade ago by Janice Steele and Eileen Mauch to thank the Marines. Volunteers donate, wrap gifts, and craft decorations while gifts valued around 40 dollars go to each child. Santa’s helper Pat Shoemaker channels Santa, and Bill Taylor creates train centerpieces. The club underwrites the lunch and accepts cash or checks through December 1. The day features about 20 elf volunteers, Merriman on piano, and carols before sailors head to the water for the Year End Regatta, the season’s first race, with standings influencing next year’s winners based on roughly 30 prior races.
