Hundreds of surfers and families packed San Onofre Trail 6 for the Western Surfing Association season opener, a record 455 signups. Orange County surfers dominated 15 of 25 divisions with winners from San Clemente, Dana Point, Laguna Beach, San Juan Capistrano, Huntington Beach and more.

SET teams win medals at Jr Olympics in Irvine
At the Junior Olympics at William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center Irvine two SET teams earned silver and bronze. SET 16U girls fell 9-8 to Santa Barbara in a tense final with a late turnover controversy. Santa Barbara claimed MVP Hauschild led 9-7 late while SET’s Bella Baldridge answered. coach Damato lamented the ending as unfair on the delay call.

Volleyball coach to be enshrined at Long Beach State Hall
Former Long Beach State player Mark Kerins, a Beach Volleyball Club coach, is named as an inductee into the Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame. The 1987 to 1990 49er standout helped the program post its first 20-win seasons, ranks second in career digs with 832 and fourth in kills at 1700. Kerins earned All America honors in 1990 and played for the U.S. national team in 1991-92. Induction is November 12 at the Long Beach Renaissance Hotel.
