Louis Blair and Victor Albert escaped from a jail, becoming fugitives from justice. Police issued alerts and broadened search efforts as authorities investigate the breakout and seek cooperation from the public.
Blair awaiting trial for abandoning his family and Victor Albert held for trial escaped from the county jail Tuesday night by sawing off a window bar on the south corridor. They used an old case knife to hacksaw bolts and escape while other inmates masked the noise. Sheriff McNally pursued but the prisoners vanished, believed to have gone east.
The W R C invites all to a supper at Odd Fellows hall on Wednesday May 138 from 5 30 until finished. Menu includes roast pork beef potatoes gravy salads beans bread cheese celery coffee doughnuts and cake with prices 15 and 25 cents.
Mr and Mrs Frank LeRoy of Niagara Wisconsin arrived Monday morning to attend the funeral of Mr Strandell the LeRoys brother in law in this city.
The county board of education met at the courthouse with five members present. Arnold of Willard was elected president and Andrews named temporary secretary. Terms drawn assign one to five years for Arnold Stubbs Andrews St Clair and Stevens. Adjournment set to Monday May 18.
The county spelling contest will be held at the training school building on Saturday May 16 at 3 p m. Teachers are urged to report promptly and arrange for students to recite parts of the program. Entries include towns Big Bend Dewey Flambeau Grant Grow Hubbard Marshall Wilson Willard Murray Rusk with top scorers listed and the county winner earning a trip to the State Fair in Milwaukee and two days paid entertainment.
All the city’s insurance agents met Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock in the Gerard Hotel and formed an association. Officers elected include President Chas Kirwan, Vice President W S Manning, Secretary O J Farge, with Mrs L J Bishel named stamping clerk.
The Peoples Dray Line plans to launch next Monday with proprietors Messrs. Carter and Decker announcing office at Drum and Davidson, phone 143, and an advertisement appearing in this issue.
Mothers Day will be observed at the Methodist church next Sunday morning with little tots speaking and the pastor delivering an address on Fathers and Mothers.
Congregational church holds Mother's Day service next Sunday at 11 o'clock in the morning. Visitors and families encouraged to attend and honor mothers with special prayers and hymns.
Ed Gehler is fixing up the interior of the Candy Kitchen in fine shape, preparing the shop for a renewed display and customer appeal.
Ladysmith High School will graduate 17 seniors this year eight boys and nine girls. Commencement on May 29 at the opera house with Euclid B. Rogers of Springfield Ill delivering the address. Baccalaureate sermon May 24 by Rev Hacking. class day May 27. Chef Scammon of Lansing Michigan received a 10 day county jail sentence for vagrancy by Justice Reeves. John Zowada of Maple Hill formerly from Sheridan Wyoming was arrested after his wife accused him of brutal assault and choking her while she was in a delicate condition. he was sentenced to 30 days in county jail to think it over.
A man broke into Guy Robinsons cabin west of the city early Wednesday, stealing a sackful of tools. Ray Weston notified police after spotting the thief, who fled by breaking a window. Chief Culver arrived with officers but the suspect vanished into brush with a black and tan dog, a known local in the area.
The fish car Badger passed through Ladysmith on Monday and left sixteen cans of trout fry. Local nim rods placed in various streams.
A hearing before Judge Wickham at Eau Claire this afternoon addressed dissolving the injunction that bars the school board from proceeding with the high school building project voted at the April 8 special meeting. Attorneys Charles Kirwan represents the school board and Barron attorney Coe represents injunction supporters.
The Cass hall band dance last Friday night drew 64 attendees and left a treasury balance of 36.19 after expenses. A $1.94 balance stood on May 1. Band boys plan open air balcony concerts at City Hall each Wednesday weather permitting from 8 60 to 9 15 p m.
The season opener at the fair grounds ended in a 5 to 5 tie between Ladysmith and Bruce after ten innings. A late rain stopped play just as Bruce threatened with a run in the tenth. Ladysmith lineup included Verhyen and Stenger. Bruce featured Coey and Lavigne among others.
Reports from several cities show the proposed state league may be abandoned. Instead of the $12.50 stock subscriptions from local businessmen, a $5.00 levy will cover suits and equipment for the local team.
The News Budget reports a large share of correct answers in last week's missing word contest with wide county participation. M L Noble won for submitting the first correct solution. Missing words were men in Thompson Mercantile ad, received in Karst Hardware, store at Pederson’s Furniture, with Pederson’s word currently omitted this week.
The city schools report Arbor Day observances and class activities. Senior class plans a May 27 class day. juniors prep for the May 8 Junior Prom. high school teams arrange games with Bruce on May 9 and a local baseball meeting selects officers and outlines a team lineup.
The Unique Theater starts Friday May 22 with the first two reel installment of Lucille Love or the Girl of Mystery a serial story being adapted from a widely published fiction. The feature will run weekly for fifteen weeks with new two reel episodes each week.
Forty Hours Devotion begins at High Mass 10:00 a.m. Sunday May 10. Polish and English sermons Sunday through Tuesday evenings. Rev Fr Emet and Rev Fr Bar ezack from Stanley will participate alongside many other priests.
Andrew Strandell aged 64 died of heart failure about six o'clock Saturday evening in Sam Harmony's saloon in this city after a brief visit with Geo Kilgore. He leaves a wife and four children, funeral at 2:00 p m Tuesday with burial in Riverside. He had lived here eight years, moving from Niagara Wisconsin.
The county board held a special session selecting committees for all county functions and voting to form a three member county reclamation board under new state law. The board also deferred action to abolish the county training school and approved funds for a new barn and silo at the county farm. A new bridge project and boundary changes were postponed to a later meeting.
A telegram from Washington Tuesday replied to A. A. Hadden regarding authority to recruit a company of sharp shooters in Rusk county for service in Mexico. The answer stated that no volunteer troops would be organized at present nor until the National Guards had been recruited to a war footing.
