The city water tower in Ladysmith nears completion and will supply 125000 gallons. A 1000 watt nitrogen filled tungsten lamp atop the tower will glow for miles, serving as a beacon for night travelers and marketing Ladysmith. Insurance ratings may rise but lower gates promise material savings for insured properties, potentially paying for the tower soon.
The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs marked 95 years since their founding with a banquet at their hall on Monday evening. A program of songs speeches and recitations followed. Sunday morning Reverend D J Howe delivered the anniversary sermon at the Christian church to a crowded audience.
Birdie Blanchette won last week’s missing word contest after submitting two correct entries to the News-Padget office. Entries misread several ads with missing words including your price and Iowa on a washing machine sticker.
All county assessors except Wilson attended a meeting at the courthouse in this city on Saturday. The session was led by Income Tax Assessor Alden J. Laidlaw with Nile P. Haugen, chairman of the state tax commission, present. Haugen and Laidlaw also spoke at a similar gathering in Hayward for Sawyer county on Monday.
A caterpillar type tractor arrived at the county this week and has proven capable of handling muddy, slippery, and uneven roads without getting stuck. It is lighter than Mogul type machines and suitable for rough road conditions. The county plans to acquire a rock crusher to complete its road equipment.

The Methodist congregation plans a fine modern church facing Verden-ay on the lot of their current church. The building will sit back from the street to allow a lawn space. Further details will follow.
The county board and the county board of education will meet in this city next Monday. W E Thompson departed for Chicago on a business trip and returns tomorrow morning. Wilmer Carow, son of Atty J W Carow, has been ill this week and is under doctors’ care assisted by Drs Cock and D J O Connor and Dr W F O Connor.
Owners of dogs must pay dog tax by June 1 1914 or incur penalties. Penalties add 50 cents to the regular tax of 1.00 for male dogs and 2.00 for female dogs. EK A Kirvan City Clerk.
Rusk County Agricultural Society re elects officers J F Mitchell V V Miller H W True L C Streater for the year. A committee on arrangements includes A C Thompson Baker and E M Worden. V V Miller to collect overdue stock subscriptions. A fair is planned for this year.
A New York production The Maid and the Minister featuring N S Scoville opens in Ladysmith on Monday evening May 4. The play blends wit and drama as the divorce question of high society is explored and ends with humane resolution. The production is noted for its expensively costumed style and fine scenery.
A good sized crowd at the Unique theater Tuesday evening heard Sarah Ruth Bates. Miss Bates has pleased Ladysmith audiences before and drew a largely satisfied reception as a reader and entertainer.
A road project proposal may pave a Mana railway line from Holcombe to Ladysmith. The plan envisions new transport links and potential economic benefits for the region.
Locators working for the Omaha railroad have reached Ladysmith seeking access. A Holcombe to Ladysmith spur could open vast timber territory and tie into the BirchwoodPark Falls route, with western entry likely, expanding business for the Menasha Wooden Ware Co.

Elmo Snobnit is constructing a barn at his property behind his Brook lyn residence, reflecting a local building project in the area.
The Flambeau River Lumber Co. sawmill started operations this week with logs on hand and an advance guard reaching Ladysmith. Officials expect the season to be the banner year in the history of the mill, with full operation likely until cold weather ends the run.
Mr. and Mrs. G. O. Davis and their child arrived from Minneapolis for a week's visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Speidel. Mrs. Davis and Mr. Speidel are cousins.
A reader letter dated April 20 1914 from Co A Weidman endorses a Burrell Lawrence Kenedy milker used on two pails milking four cows at once. He notes power from a 3 hp gasoline engine, says it milks 20 to 26 cows per hour with one operator, and reports cows prefer it to hand milking. The machine was bought through A H Barber Creamery Supply Co Chicago.
The county announces a mandatory inventory of school libraries excluding text books and large references. Teachers must submit alphabetized inventories to the county superintendent before last month's salary is issued. Diploma exams for graded schools set for May 21 and 22 with papers sent to the office.
The body found April 6 on the Big Four tracks in Lakewood is identified as Rev. Louis Patmont of Milwaukee a temperance worker. Coroner Byrne and relatives confirm murder and authorities suspect the Rev may have been killed in Danville with the body placed on a freight car.
A. A. Hadden plans to raise a company of ten sharp shooters for active service. The move reflects wartime recruitment efforts and local enlistment ambitions.
A. A. Hadden, former First Lieutenant of the Third Nebraska Vol., telegrams Washington requesting President Wilson’s authority to enlist a company of volunteer sharpshooters for service in Mexico. No response yet, and the fate of raising a unit depends on peace negotiations. Hadden cites prior military training and Spanish‑American War service.
Marshall Sergeant died at his home Tuesday night of pleuro pneumonia aged 68 years 2 months and 2 days. He is survived by his wife and six children. Funeral services were held yesterday at the Baptist church with Rev. E S Laux officiating. Interment followed in Riverside cemetery under G A R W R C and S of V auspices. He was one of the first settlers of what is now Rusk county and the first sheriff elected in 1902.
Mrs. H. A. Shaffer, age 62, died at her home near Maple Center Tuesday from apoplexy. Funeral held at the Christian church with Rev. D. J. Howe presiding and burial in Riverside cemetery this afternoon.
D. J. Wittig and F. H. Peterson of Green Bay visited the area early this week to discuss a pickle plant proposal. The plans hinge on securing sufficient acreage for potential local operations.
Martin Dewin made a business trip to Canton today. Lee Van Patter of Glen Flora, John Craney and Tom Clark from Ingram were in the city today. John Burk of Marshalltown Iowa bought an 80 acre farm in Thornapple this week and will move onto it at once.
