Prosperous farmers near Tony expect brisk building this spring and summer. Notable plans include Fred Leonhard near Tony for a 26 by 30 foot one and a half story residence, John Mikyska for a barn addition, Peter Leonhard for a barn, and Arthur Mautner for a large stone and cement barn measuring 86 by 85 feet.
Flambeau Camp No. 24 R N A held a large initiation Monday evening in the I O O F hall for 126 candidates. Deputy Supreme Oracle Min ch ie Comstock led the ceremony with aid from camp members amid a program of music, readings, and thanks. Deputy Comstock received a cameo broach from Elizabeth Davis and a ring for most applicants.
The Hawkins Boosters plan a Saturday night meeting inviting several from Lady Smith to boost attendance. Hawkins promotes progress and aims to contribute to the Rusk County Million Dollar Land Clearing Contest success.
John Mataczynski and Wanda Mindy Kowalski both of Conrath received marriage licenses. William V Johnson and Thelma Alberta LaMere, both of Ladysmith, also obtained licenses.
H W Flunker plans a 100 percent pure bred dairy herd after adding five pure bred cows from a recent carload. He sold five high grade cows, boosting his stock to twelve pure bred cows and heifers plus a pure bred bull. Six high grade cows remain for future pure bred entries. Flunker Bros. foresee future pure bred Holstein sales in Ladysmith. Fifteen buyers at Friday's sale reside north of Ladysmith.
Enos Yoder of southern Michigan wrote John S. Bordner to buy a 40 acre tract near Walrath in Rusk County and asked to purchase an adjoining 40 acres after sending payment. Yoder had visited last fall and knows the country.
Travelers to Ladysmith face scarce sleeping quarters with two elderly women forced to sit in chairs all night and five women unable to find rooms. Local high contractors were forced to stay up all night seeking lodging. Residents with spare rooms are urged to list them with the Baker or Gerard hotels to ease the congestion.
Vast attendance marks Taylor and Fleming meetings, drawing people from all churches and outside communities. Taylor's sermons emphasize patriotism and Christian practice, with music numbers by Fleming and a male quartet. Services continue nightly through Easter with topics planned for Sunday and a final note on ongoing evenings except Monday.
John Leuthi who settled on the Chippewa river near Flambeau 22 years ago owns a family bible printed in Switzerland in 1772. The volume has about 1350 pages with pictures and maps, measures 10 by 16 by 4 inches, and is bound with hog skin covered boards and tin corner protectors. It remains in good preservation.
At the Ladysmith Baker Hotel, the Rusk County Real Estate Brokers discussed a serious hotel shortage. A five member committee F I Tinghes M A Peoples F W Kasil W A Blackburn I M Doyle was appointed to study possible relief measures.
Auctions posters advertise a sale at Jeannie Day's farm set for Monday March 29. The item reads as a local community listing with farm transfers and upcoming moves spanning several households and counties.
Gus and Merritt Lawrence were arrested March 23 on beating and abusing a horse, pleading not guilty and setting March 26 at 9 00 a m. Archie Saunders arrested March 24 for desertion, pleading not guilty with March 25 at 2 00 p m set. John Traczyk and Lawrence Placz found guilty of assault with fines of 10 dollars and costs.
O J Hagemoen owns a 56 acre farm by the river opposite the hospital and raised six acres of potatoes last year with sales totaling 1748 dollars. He plans about the same acreage again this year and uses a three year crop rotation. His planting style spaces hills 83 feet by 21 half feet to ease cultivation and reduce small potatoes.
Last week the News-Budget announced that J. H. Torley sold his stake in the Gerard hotel to L. C. Streater. At press time A S Tinker, the hotel manager and part owner, purchased Streater's interest, becoming the sole owner of the property.
Mr and Mrs C K Ellingson returned home Tuesday morning after a two months tour of the south including a visit to Cuba. They visited Mobile Alabama Miami Florida New Orleans and several other places. Elmer Wise has purchased the feed business of R M Goldsmith. The latter will continue to operate the cream station.
Palm Sunday events detailed with Mass times, sermons, confessions, and blessings at St. Phillip’s. Highlights include low and high Masses, processions, prayer services, and Holy Week devotions led by Rev. A Bauman, Rev. O Feeney, and Rev. A Keenan. The Polish priest will hear confessions locally on Holy Saturday.
Mrs. Walter LaRonge of Flambeau died at St Mary's hospital after influenza and pneumonia leading to blood poisoning. She was 33 years, 2 months and 13 days old, and the body was returned to Flambeau for burial. Survived by husband Walter LaRonge, five children, her parents Mr and Mrs Frank Sinette, two brothers Trebly and Lester, and sister Mrs Joe La Ronge of Reserve.
Married Mr James O Cook and Miss May bell T Colman both of Tony were joined by Rev CC W Emery at the Methodist parsonage on Thursday March 18. They will reside on a farm near Glen Flora.
F L Brado of Exeland opened a new store in Exeland the first of the week in a building he erected last summer. The shop offers groceries flour and clothing. He was in La Crosse on Saturday to oversee the launch.
A son named Tony was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Zimmer on Saturday. Nora Foswell resumes assisting at the local post office. Peter Sybers and Hugh Yankee were seen Sunday evening. Easter vacation set for the local school from Tuesday to April 6. Eye tests revealed defective vision among some students. Several Ladysmith residents visited. Families relocated within the area. A hat exhibition occurred in the town hall with a fine display. Nurse in training Anna Christman returned home to care for her ill sister-in-law. Sybers basketball leader returned from Eau Claire where Ladysmith placed third. An updated stairway and two pool tables are added to the Sybers cafe upstairs with future dances planned.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben French and son Maniey returned Monday night after a three month western tour that included sixteen states and Mexico. They spent two months in Los Angeles in shared apartments with former Ladysmith residents and visited several old friends in Portland and Pomona.
A two year old Holstein heifer raised at the Flunker farm north of Ladysmith sold for $227 at the Flunkey sale last Friday. It set a county record as the highest price ever paid for a grade heifer in Rusk county.
Pat C. H. Wirth visited Ingram last week and bought a full team of four year old Percheron mares from Nate Hand. The mares weigh about 2600 pounds, are black and iron gray, and described as a fine snappy farm team of the right size.
At a Thursday meeting the Ladysmith county clearing contest drew Iver Bergstrom W C Roseberry C A Bugher R W Richardson H M Jones and other local figures. About $2000 has been collected locally with similar sums countywide. A stenographer is in the county agents office. The county is divided into 17 districts as a contingency. The executive committee may pay bills and solicits business support to finish funding. Charles Bugher and N M Blain joined the committee to represent their areas. Many farmers have applied to join the contest and expectations are high for wide participation and benefits.
Miss Jessie Sergeant rested at home while Frank Gerkish battles influenza. An Earl Loper sale drew a large crowd with strong prices. Mrs Chester Sergeant visited Ladysmith from Friday to Monday. Miss Gladys Deihl began work in Miss Belbeck's room on the 15th. Roy Cox of Holcombe visited locals for a dance last Saturday. Ira Sergeant relocated to the sugar camp last Wednesday seeking a profitable season. Susan Lacy and Florence Drake from Ladysmith attended the dance and visited nearby. Mark Sergeant traveled to Milwaukee then Winnett Montana via northern Kansas. The cheese factory opened on March 22 with Geo Pfanzer of Colby as cheesemaker and milking every other day.
William Jennings Bryan announced a broad tour beginning with a Ladysmith stop on Friday, April 23. He framed his mission as repaying the American people and urged reforms, comparing civilization to a mighty river that cannot be denied.
Conductor John Misslin of the Soo Line suffered severe scalding to his face and right eye when a basin of boiling water aboard a moving freight train in the Ladysmith area spilled after a sudden stop. He was taken to Ladysmith for medical treatment.
Cameron Drake will erect the first Ladysmith residence in 1920 on his northwest city lot. The 26 by 28 foot, one and a half story house will have a full basement with cement block walls made by EF F Bye.
