Guards in Camp to Train at Camp Douglas in July
The Ladysmith state guards will camp at Camp Douglas from July 27 for a week. They will train in tactics sham battles marching and marksmanship. They receive shoes from the government and an outfit is nearly complete. A Sunday hike to Carter schoolhouse includes target practice with two rifles and 5 000 rounds supplied. A military ball is planned for July 3 or 4 with details to follow.

Electric storm strikes Birchwood residence three times
The Charles Amey home in Birchwood Wisconsin was struck three times during a recent electrical storm. Minor damage occurred but the house could have suffered a fatal outcome if the Amey daughter had been in her bed as lightning struck it.

County Clerk Pays Bounties for Wolves This Week
This week the county clerk issued payments for wolf bounty claims. J. E. Jones of Washington received $10 for a wolf. Wm Rybarczyk of Hawkins collected $40 for a wolf and five pups.

Local Recruits Sent to Puget Sound
The News-Budget reports William R. Schwartz enlisted in the navy as a seaman last week and was sent to Milwaukee for examination. He says he passed and headed for Puget Sound, Wash., with Roy Jacobs. Other enlistees went to Great Lakes, Ill.

Annu al Guernsey Sale Draws Big Crowd and High Prices
Atty L E McGill attended the Eau Claire Guernsey Breeders Association sale and bought a registered bull and heifer. Large turnout and brisk trading sent stock to high prices, including a butter fat record cow at 535 dollars. McGill recently sold three bulls from City View Farm to Isaac Ammerman Carl Kreklau and William Daigle. The Daigle sire Rose's Champion of Whitelaw won blue at the last Rusk County Fair.

Will Register German Women Begins June 17
By order of the Attorney General German alien females will begin registration Monday June 17 and continue through Wednesday June 26. Registration hours are 6:00 am to 8:00 pm except Sunday June 23 with Manning and Swaim’s office as the local site. The War Work Division of the Department of Justice oversees the process in small communities, with finger prints and four photos required for each registrant.

Ray L. Smith reports from Camp Eagle Pass Texas that six other Rusk county youths joined him in the Third United States Infantry forming Company L. The group traveled 75 hours by train from Camp Grant via Galesburg Arkansas City Fort Worth and San Antonio to Eagle Pass near the Rio Grande. Also noted Ruben Antonoff failed the army physical and will return to Ladysmith after a visit to New York.

Rusk County Boy Dies in France During War Service
Victor Earl Johnson of Weyerhaeuser, a private in Battery B, 120th U S Field Artillery, died in France May 15 from diphtheria after a period of illness following mumps. He volunteered June 29 1917 with Troop K First Wisconsin Cavalry, later joining the artillery unit. Survived by parents two brothers twin sister and two sisters. He was 24.

Hospital Receives First Patients at New St Marys
