City Ladysmith High School easily defeated the city team 29 to 21 last Saturday night. The eighth grade hosted a Christmas program for the first graders with Floyd Sabin as Santa Claus. New features included Current Events by Vinton Moore and readings by Frank Kyle and Miss Tellie Kaufman.
Highcashed workmen will stop work for Christmas and New Year’s Day with only one day between, likely halting until the following Monday. Brick-layers plan the delay. steam-fitters head to La Crosse for vacation. W H Oliver in charge of plumbing will spend Christmas at St Paul with a plan to move his wife to the city.
Joseph Dvorak infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Dvorak died Wednesday afternoon at their Grow town home six miles southeast of the city. Born December 6 the baby’s funeral occurred Wednesday from the home with Rev. H Baumbach officiating and burial followed at Riverside cemetery.
The state railway commission authorized the Soo Railroad to raise capital from 42 million 000 to 63 million 000 dollars.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Brown of Minneapolis visit Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Gillette to spend the holidays. The gathering highlights family connections during the season.
Thompson Mercantile Co. of Ladysmith Wisconsin lists Poys' 8 inch top rubbers with price noted as $1.29 in a brief local display.
Our school closed for holidays with several visitors including Emma Moore a 1914 graduate teaching at Kennan and Arlia Grandy from the class of 1914 who teaches at Pepper. Miss E M Plant a math teacher from Dollar Bay Mich attended Monday and Tuesday. The Universitys farmers school and domestic art session runs January 12 to 17. Louis Blanchard bought the Fourboul farm on the Chippewa river with a hundred dollars down. Now with 12 horses, 22 cattle, 18 hogs, 60 acres cleared and a $10 000 value he raised 1200 bushels potatoes on 3.5 acres and 1700 baskets of corn from 14 acres. The piece touts county prospects and rewards for hard work.
The Eastern Star lodge installed officers last Friday evening led by Worthy Matron Mrs A N Anderson and Worthy Patron Rev Charles Saunders. Officers include Assistant Matron Mrs Frank Manley Secretary Mrs E W Hughes and Treasurer A N Andersen with a banquet served afterward.
The Training School staged a Christmas closing program Tuesday with a large audience. Girls performed dumb-bell calisthenics to piano, the children's model school presented a dialogue, and the grownups’ Christmas Chimes featured an extensive cast with realistic scenes including a donation party and a trimming the Christmas Tree. Songs such as Johnny Schmoker Canst du Spielen plus a new gong rendition added festive energy. The event highlighted school spirit along the Flambeau River and a richly decorated Christmas tree drew admiration.
Dick Dawson alias John Day, arrested last month, had a Monday hearing on stealing three overcoats from Noble Rowley at McGill's restaurant and the Commercial hotel. he was fined 50 dollars plus costs and jailed 30 days for nonpayment. Paul Priczka, arrested a week earlier for shooting Geo Crazlok and himself being shot in the leg during apprehension, was scheduled for a Monday hearing but the case was continued to January 9 due to his condition.

Miss Rachel Adams and Orville W. Hanchett of Hawkins were married Tuesday morning December 22 at 10 o clock in the home of the bride’s parents, Rev. D J Howe officiating. Attendants were Mc Manus of Barron and Elsie Hanchett of Hawkins. They will reside in Hawkins after a wedding dinner.
Chas Donahue a locomotive engineer and Miss Nina Coney both of Ladysmith were united in marriage Monday evening at the residence of R S Reeves with the judge performing the ceremony.
The Lady Smith Volunteer Fire Department hosts its tenth annual ball at Casy Hall Thursday evening December 31. Lyell's Harp Orchestra provides music, promising fine entertainment. Tickets cost $1.00 and are encouraged for all attendees.
Berlin reports Mlawa in northern Poland has been recaptured after days of fighting. German forces press toward Skierniewice near Warsaw while Grand Duke Nicholas withdraws from Cracow. Galicia sees renewed Russian offensives against Austro German troops crossing the Carpathians.
Carl Jung of the Vienna Bakery receives a letter from Mrs Dorothea Lukas near Luxemburg describing the high wartime cost. A son-in-law and two sons have joined, one son 20 drafted. one local soldier killed and several wounded. Lukas's town population is 250 yet has contributed 35 to the fight and 20 more ready for muster.
The Hoard's Dairyman editor notes La dysmith farmers showed keen interest at the State Dairy Association convention. He emphasizes Wisconsin's dairy belt, with small fields and varied crops suited to the region. Roots, clover, and corn provide strong feeds for dairy cows and silage.
Bishop Quayle will preach at the Unique Theatre on Sunday morning January 3 during his Ladysmith visit. He is described as a leading American with a generous, strong preacher’s voice. Mrs Mettie Peters of La Crosse and Miss Alice Rybold of La Moille Minnesota arrived Tuesday to spend the holidays with Mr and Mrs D F Moreau.
