Draft process moves ahead as 1100 names appear on rush lists. County Clerk Munroe and staff prepare mailed questionnaires for registered men, with seven days to return completed forms. Attorneys receive copies of the document and filling instructions to offer free guidance.

Hawkins and Prof Van Tassel lead a crack county team against the Lady Smith Alumni Saturday at the high school gym. Volkman and Jacobs join Ladysmith. O J Farge referees. Proceeds aid the skating rink project by the Chamber of Commerce and city.
The Camp Fire Girls of the Methodist church plan a Christmas candy sale at Bon Ton Grocery on Thursday afternoon December 20. All candy will be made after the latest approved wartime recipes. Buy a box to send to a soldier boy.
City officials refute rumors that Lieut. Ralph Drum is gravely ill in a Waco hospital with spinal meningitis. A Drum family inquiry at Lake Avenue Friday found no news confirming illness or danger, and no telegrams indicating such a condition.
Chief Gunners Mate E T Helmer recorded a rapid enlistment surge in Ladysmith and Milwau keh with 12 men enlisting and 26 rejected for physical defects. Rusk County stands alone in the state with no drafted soldiers. 52 volunteers have offered in two weeks, with 20 accepted and 32 rejected.

Chippewa Falls plans a rehearing on a new highway route to Ladysmith aiming for a direct trunk line from Chippewa Falls via Eagle Point to Cornell Lake and then toward Holcombe. Rusk county now pays $2 per hundred for a three year farm building fire policy covering fire, lightning, tornado and wind. The new rate, adopted Sept 15, puts Rusk with upper state forest counties like Sawyer and Price, while Barron Chippewa and Southern Wisconsin counties keep the old rate. The Insurance Commissioner M J Cleary ordered the change. reasons remain unclear. F M Doyle of the Chamber of Commerce urged restoring the old schedule, a request under study by the State Inspection Bureau, with Deputy Insurance Commissioner Wim Kubasta opposing the differential and favoring the old rate.
Milwaukee officer Lieut C S Faulkner of the American Corps serving with the French army speaks at the high school gym on Friday December 21 in uniform with 150 lantern slides and battlefield relics to raise Red Cross funds. Admission is free but children enter after adults are seated.
Earl Tupper, jailed for bigamy, has applied to plead guilty and on Saturday will appear before Judge Maloney for plea and sentence. He admits legal marriage to the Dakota wife and to the woman he is living with.
Firefighters battled a woodshed blaze on Miner avenue belonging to P. F. Keith. The Hofberger home of Fred Hofberger stood nearby and the barn of J. L. McComson was saved. Loss estimated at 100 dollars.
The city will levy six tenths of a mill on the tax roll to cover a $1,236.96 judgment against joint school district No 1 and Flambeau town, arising from the 1914 bond sale. The tax funds will be placed in a separate account as required by law. The case stems from Kissel, Kinnicutt & Co. failing to take bonds after adverse opinions, leading to a resale at par and a court ruling in favor of the bond house. The Bond Buyer criticizes the handling of the district’s bond issue and warns municipalities about relying on bond houses’ opinions.
Rahr said after reviewing actions of other cities the decision was made to close schools for a two week vacation starting September 21. The late hour announcement followed an investigation into local actions.
