J A Hewitt reports he has slaughtered 56 hogs this fall and advertises Ladysmith as ready for a young packing house. The piece urges city officers and farmers to pursue a local packing operation, citing Green Bay's packing house example with about 1,000,000 monthly revenue.
The winter Short Course in Agriculture at the training school offers practical Dairying and Animal Husbandry classes. Students will learn milk testing, ration calculation, and dairy cattle judging based on production records. Some trainees may enter Cow Testing Associations. demand for qualified workers is strong. Catalogues are available from Mr. Dresden or the county agent.
E. M. Worden reports he has fixed the third floor of his Wordenay store building for residences and plans to prepare more property to ease the city house shortage. The flats include water, sewer and electric lights, plus a 16 by 40 foot storage room and drying space. Current tenants are Charles Schwam J. H. Johnson Wm. Coffman and Leo Porter.
A. C. Johnson is applying Krag stone stucco on his new south side residence. Ernest Drum of Ladysmith performs the work while Lampert Lumber Co furnishes the Kragstone and stucco. The finish is praised as equal to city standards.
J J Theesfield repurchased a 40 acre farm in sec 8 grow township four years ago this spring and moved in three years ago January. He built a barn and house and expanded this year. The farm now has 15 acres of plow land over 50 acres brush and is fully fenced. He paid 3200 dollars and values it at 8000. Livestock include eleven milch cows young stock pigs chickens and a team. Hay is 35 tons and rutabaga yield 350 bushels from 1 1/2 acres.
Mrs. Albert Hovind died at her home Monday morning from pneumonia at age 35. Survived by husband and two daughters Helen and Thelma. Funeral Thursday at the Scandinavian Lutheran church with Rev. Rutland officiating. burial at Riverside. The family came from Hawkins about eight years ago and she was active in church work and well regarded in the community.
At a chamber meeting last Friday evening K Ellingson offered hardwood on 4000 acres near Hawkins for 1.00 per cord on the ground and M O Emmons offered wood on his farm six miles northeast of Ladysmith free for cutting. Emmons wood is cheap and abundant, Ellingson timber promising first class quality. M H Barton editor of the Rhinelander Daily News was in Ladysmith on business.
BR. M. Apker, cashier of Chetek State Bank, argues against the Plumb plan to nationalize railroads. He contends wage-price dynamics hurt consumers, questions government ownership, and urges returning railroads to private management to cut freight rates and restore efficiency.
The Bethany Sisters collected forty dollars more than last year with an annual sale held last Saturday raising 394 dollars. Miss Tellie Kaufman traveled to Minneapolis Monday and returned home last night.
The Ladysmith colony of the Beavers Reserve Fund Fraternity elected M. W. B. Glenn Carter as chief, Nellie Rice as queen, Julius Dobberpuhl as warden, Alden J. Laidlaw as secretary, Anson Bruegger as treasurer, Amy Hogeboom as officer of love, Luella Bruegger as princess, Byron Bruegger as guide, Otis C. Adams as trapper and trustee. Medical examiners are Dr. L. M. Lundmark and Dr. C. E. Bugher, with Mrs. Wittenberger as organist. Installation set for January 13 at the hall with plans for a large attendance and merriment.
Limited trains 17 and 18 known as the Velvet Special now run only from Duluth to Owen and back. Passengers must connect at Owen with main line trains Nos 3 and 4 for southbound and Twin Cities travel.

The Rusk County Automotive Association was organized at the Thompson-Drake Auto Co. garage with garage men and dealers voting to run a strictly cash business from Jan 1. Officers elected include Jr. I. Drake as president and Mark R. Kell as secretary, with a draft of monthly meetings and member dues set at zero. The event featured an oyster supper at McGill's hosted by Mr. Drake.
Miss Edna Means of the Means Anderson Entertainment Company brings a three-girl act to town for the lyceum course Friday evening December 12. The trio features Miss Means in male impersonations, Miss Anderson on violin, and Miss Sellers on piano, praised for talent and stage presence.
Oral subscriptions in the recent Red Cross drive totaled 829.00 in Rusk county with 463.00 from Ladysmith and 366.00 from other areas. When all receipts are in the total will reach about 900. Send cash to campaign manager George T. Stine at once.
At a recent Chamber of Commerce meeting KF M Doyle was elected director joining new directors We A Blackbun and KE M Worden. Elected officers include President I C Streater Secretary W A Blackturn Treasurer J L McComson and Vice President Frank Fountain. Regular monthly meetings were set for the first Wednesday. directors will meet the first and third Wednesdays.
The Ladysmith Grocer Co will occupy their new building by the first of the year. The structure is enclosed, the basement floor of concrete is finished, and the furnace is installed.
A local message from Rusk County officials states the plan to eliminate scrub bulls and promote 100 percent pure bred cattle in each town. The announcement signals a countywide effort with progress expected item by item.
Ladysmith Wisconsin promotes a book let titled Ladysmith the Opportunity City. The Chamber of Commerce urges purchase for Christmas packages and sends to friends. Books priced at 5 cents are available in Ladysmith stores.
The high school community outlines fundraising for a French girl in France, a new school paper plan, and a Glee Club for girls who sing. A mothers cooking class aims to teach economical meals, Christmas programs are set for December 19, and school closes that day for Christmas vacation returning January 5. A Boy Scout group forms with 47 boys present and leaders named. The manual training shop builds wooden toys, and Mr. Boyce speaks on thrift with weekly savings guidance. Continued on Page 10.
A large turnout is expected Saturday afternoon at the training school as Rusk County farmers push to organize a Cow Testing Association. The effort began months ago and aims to spread to neighboring areas with strong support from Tony area farmers.
A banquet for all the city business men will be held the evening of January first with a good program planned. Citizens are urged to keep the date open for this event and join the gathering.
Mrs. Martha Moore aged 74 died Tuesday at her daughter Frances Grip's home from injuries suffered last August when she fell from the Grip porch. Funeral services were held at B Ellingboe's undertaker parlors with burial at Riverside.
L L Streater spent Thursday in Minneapolis. N E Smith moved his family to Hawkins onto a 50 acre farm bought last summer. Ed and Will Pagel attended their brother's wife Mrs Ernest Pagel funeral in Chicago after goiter operation. Dr W L Stephenson called to Chippewa Falls for his wife who is ill in hospital. Dr W Weaver and son Chas with Mr and Mrs Ray Veer of Wendell Minn visited M I McFarland home. R H Burns plans to improve his 200 acre wild land near J Mr and J H McFarland. About thirty five couples danced Wednesday at Odd Fellows hall with a lap lunch. Odd Fellows held a big homecoming Thursday night, Rebekahs joined for a fine lunch. A press delay hit News Budget's edition due to a press breakdown. W A Ferguson, ex superintendent, resumes paper mill work at New Castle Pa and is healthier. Theo Newhouse and P J Leonhard family visited then went to Cornell to see daughters.
