Soo Line announces passenger, freight, express plus Pullman rate hikes effective today. Passenger fares rise 20 percent and Pullman charges 50 cents, with freight and express rates also up. Wisconsin Railroad Commission says it lacks authority to grant increases inside the state, so intrastate fares stay unchanged for now.
A. Calkins and his herd of Jersey hogs near Flanker factory are rated the finest in northern Wisconsin. The herd includes Long bn, the county fair winner, Taxpayers Sing Lady with a strong fall litter and Trailmaker's Lady, plus several two year olds. Hogs will compete at Milwaukee State Fair next week despite Calkins’s recent move.
An explosion at the Fountain Campbell saw mill last Thursday night sent the cock-head and cylinder head of the main steam engine flying through an open car. No one was injured and work continued despite the disruption. The cause could not be determined.
Rusk County shows a 47 percent population rise to 16 403, compared to ten years ago. Neighboring Taylor County also up 32 percent at 6 403, matching Rusk in raw count.
Gertrude Thompson was granted a divorce from A. C. Thompson by Judge Gustave G. Gehrz in Barron County Circuit Court. Custody of Marian and Clayton with a $15,000 settlement and $250 monthly alimony. Describes desertion. Thompson claimed worth over $250,000 and ran a Chicago hotel.
County Highway Commissioner H W Yrue reports traffic figures for Bruce Ladysmith road No 14. Wisconsin cars foreign cars trucks motorcycles and horse drawn vehicles counted on July 25 August 10 and August 22 with grand total 2656 and an average 885 1 3 per day. Rainy day August 10 reduced Wisconsin cars but foreign cars stayed strong and horse drawn transport rose as farmers went to town.
County Clerk Munroe issued initial hunting licenses and warns that deer tags are metal this year but not yet received. Tags attach to the skin at the hock joint with an inter-locking seal. Purchasers must sign licenses or wardens will confiscate them. The one buck law returns this year. Open season remains the last ten days in November.
Harold W Wright underwent appendectomy last Saturday and is progressing well. Kuzma Moray had a ruptured appendix operation on Monday. Mrs John Skozen from Weyerhaeuser had Tuesday surgery. Mrs George Shaddack of Hawkins arrived yesterday with appendicitis. John Vick of this city lost two fingers of his left hand after a chair factory accident. A son was born to Mrs Valentine Miller of Tony on Monday.
A pretty Scandinavian Lutheran church wedding in Ladysmith linked Miss Julia C. Nelson of Island Lake with Rev. John M. Ritland, pastor since 1912. The ceremony featured a floral arch, double ring rites, and a reception for more than 160 guests before a Yellowstone honeymoon trip.
TT C Jones proposes erecting one or two electric signs near the Ladysmith depot to promote the city. The signs would tout local advantages such as power for factories and homes and highlight Ladysmith as a growing hub on regional travel routes.
The 1920 tax rolls have been received for the county covering thirty-one taxing districts. The records detail assessed properties and valuations across the region for tax collection.
Vice President Thomas R. Marshall will visit Ladysmith on November 11 to open the 1920 1921 lyceum season. Five first class numbers are planned in the course, the most expensive talent lineup ever in Rusk County. Marshall, Senate presiding officer, is a national figure expected to draw residents from across the county and neighboring counties for a patriotic Armistice Day event.
All taxing districts report dog license collections to the county treasurer except Big Falls Ingram and Conrath. The total is 3722 with 15 percent remitted to the state treasurer. The largest single family payment is a Flambeau family at 38 for dog tax.
The Big Falls Water Power Company contracts with Flambeau River Lumber to supply steam for two power units to serve Ladysmith if existing equipment fails. Flambeau River Lumber supplies additional boilers and L. E. Myers Company builds the new plant, expected to be operative by January 1, 1921.
Work began Tuesday on a 16 by 40 foot horse barn for Troop K cavalry horses at the county fair grounds. The cattle barn nearing completion will be finished next week. Together they will widen stabling capacity and be a valued improvement for stockmen.
The canning factory finished its season's run Saturday and many workers will be busy for weeks preparing the pack for shipment.
On August 19 the potato excursion led by J. G. Milward visited Ladysmith and Bruce, where supper at the Commercial Hotel preceded trips to nearby certified potato fields. At Bruce the 35 acre Green Mountains field was praised as the best seen in three states, with a large party of experts and officials from Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, and Louisiana in attendance.
W. O. B edged Teddy Bear in tight heats marking the first harness race of the season at the county fairgrounds. Miller’s pacer, with W. V. Miller and Elmer Briggs entries contending, posted best time 2:27y and drew spectator bets. Officials expect Miller’s horse to race soon at Chippewa Falls Spooner or Rice Lake.
Dr. Lord and Dr. Claflan of the U S Department of Agriculture completed tuberculosis tests on ten dairy herds in Rusk County over the past ten days. All herds showed no reactors and will be added to the federal accredited herd list with certificates of freedom from tuberculosis. Herds tested include Flunker Schmidt Boyer Crandell Goff Son Eastman Dern Briggs Benoy and others.
Members of the Scandinavian Lutheran church of Ladysmith hosted a farewell reception for Martin Backen and his children at Thos. Gundersons home east of town. Guests raised a nice collection for the family before their departure for Norway. The event featured games including a baseball match won 14 to 9 by Harold Schiotz’s team over Clarence Hanson’s.
Edward Burgett of this city was arrested by Undersheriff Dodson with Police Officer Woodard and Special Officer Davis for threatening personal violence against his wife. A hearing before Judge Maloney set bonds at 200 to keep the peace, but he failed to secure them and remains in jail.
Chris Unger, ten miles northwest of Ladysmith, found a solid gold ring in the roots of a potato plant after suspects raided thirty to forty hills. A thief reportedly pulled up vines and hid the plant while leaving the ring as payment. The ring is a man's size and Unger would prefer cash advances in the future.
FP Morse announces the Wisconsin Produce Co has leased the Morgan potato warehouse for five years and will occupy it by September 1. Morse says the farmers organization operates in several northern Wisconsin towns and invites farmers to investigate its methods and join to secure higher crop prices.
A board of governors was elected and 67 acres from the T. M. Thomas farm near Ladysmith chosen for a country club. A clubhouse will rise next summer and a nine hole golf course laid out this summer or fall on prime land by Flam-beau river.
A rural mail carriers picnic at Amacoy Lake last Sunday brought together the Rusk County League of Postmasters and the Rusk County Rural Letter Carriers Association. A combined meeting led to the formation of the Rusk County Postal Employees Association with a one dollar membership and officers elected: Pres. Jim Buchholz VPres. Lawrence Cox Treas. John Rodel Sec. Oscar F.E. Dahlquist.
Rice Lake travels to host Ladysmith for the sixth meeting of the year. Ladysmith aims to extend its series lead with a new pitcher and Connell back at short. First pitch is scheduled for 3 o clock.
Exeland overcomes Gilman 8 to 6 after six runs in the eighth inning. Bruce defeats Ladysmith 10 to 1 as Garvish pitching fuels Bruce win with 11 hits. Game time 1 hour 40 minutes at Rice Lake exhibition.
