A three day convention of the Wisconsin State Christian Missionary Association is held in Ladysmith. Organizers invite members and interested Christians to attend sessions, prayer, and fellowship across the event.
State gathering brings prominent church leaders to Ladysmith for a three day event. I W Burnham of Cincinnati and Geo W Muckley of Kansas City head the program with Miss Gertrude Yaeger directing musical features. The convention marks Ladysmith as an important center and continues Milwaukee’s twice in four years pattern.
Ada Phalen threw glass fruit jars at her husband William Phalen during a Tuesday argument at home. He punched her in the eye and she filed a complaint. In Justice Reeves' court on Wednesday Phalen was fined five dollars plus costs totaling eleven dollars and twenty five cents. Both received a scolding and the man paid the fine.
The Twentieth Century Club enjoyed strong attendance at a demonstration at the J. G. Tate home led by Miss Rowntree. An informal discussion followed, sharing ideas on food conservation while Professor B. Mack Dresden spoke on the Red Cross goals and urged a local Rusk County Chapter.
W A Carroll is the latest Over land convert in this city. The ice cream social advertised for Monday evening on the Co. B. Ellingboe lawn will be held on the city hall lawn as notified by the News-Bud.
Ladysmith business and professional men traveled to Eau Claire on Thursday for a baseball game in wet conditions. Official score put Ladysmith ahead 18 to 6 after a rain shortened contest, with a light crowd and postgame travels to Chippewa Falls for supper.
Land Department of the Sea film unit shot hundreds of feet of moving pictures in Rusk and nearby counties to promote Wisconsin as a sheep grazing state. Darlington ranch pastures were filmed, with exhibits to debut at the Sheep And Wool Growers' Association in Chicago on September 11 and 12. Chief Clerk Funston and E F Seawall led the project, aiming to show Cedar fence post efficiency and Wisconsin lands development to audiences in Montana and beyond.
The Northern Wisconsin Canning Co. owned by Grafton Johnson of Greenwood Indiana sold its Ladysmith Clear Lake and Cumberland plants to Fame Canning Co. Indiana. Atty O J Falge who oversaw the Iceal plant says it will run full blast next year.
Mrs. N. Whiteford returned from a two week visit to Quebec where she met her husband a Canadian army corporal. She saw maimed soldiers, gas scars, and shell shock faces, and heard that contingents are leaving for France. Returned soldiers say American entry will hasten the end of the war.
Daily new mumps cases delay Company K’s transfer from Camp Douglas to Texas. The unit remains under quarantine and will stay in the state camp until the risk subsides.

The West Wisconsin Conference of the M E church opens Wednesday in Madison with Bishop Charles Bayard Mitchell presiding. Rusk county pastors will attend. no lay delegates are present. Main event is pastor assignments. Rev. Birrell may stay in Ladysmith while changes elsewhere are expected.
Curtis Coleman of Ladysmith was jailed overnight on a charge of fast driving while intoxicated but the intoxication charge was not pressed when he appeared before Justice Reeves. Grover, also of Ladysmith, was fined 25 dollars and costs after pleading guilty to driving while intoxicated under new laws. A police drive to curb drunken driving continues.
Mr and Mrs F I Hughes departed Friday for a weeklong stay at Connors Lake for a leisure outing.
Ed Juneau aged 65 to 70 serving a 60 day sentence for violating game laws sneaked through an open jail door during sheriff repairs and fled two blocks before being chased down by Simon. He from Wilson township lives alone in a log shack and is famed in early Wisconsin lore. He was captured a block and a half later after breaking from the jail in Ladysmith. County officials report sole other prisoner A H McCormick awaiting wife murder trial.
State Industrial Commission heard testimony in Barron County as Mrs L Whitcomb seeks $2000 damages for the death of her husband. Vasey employed Whitcomb and contracted with Flambeau River Lumber Co. Whitcomb died after a fall while bark peeling. delay in aid cited. Son Edwin testified as key witness.
St Marys School will reopen Tuesday September 4 with Fr Bauman as principal and the same faculty as last year. The ten month term offers grades plus a complete three year high school course with emphasis on music starting September 4. County superintendent approves eighth grade and high school work and signs certificates. Ladysmith children and neighbors invited to attend regardless of religion.
Reverend W H Storm, pastor of the Christian Church at Ladysmith, will preach his farewell sermon on Sunday with the topic Where the Bible Speaks and will conduct evening services. He departs September 1 for Chicago to handle a new Bible Encyclopedia for a leading publisher.
Judge Maloney heard the Merrill Jones versus Reed heirs case over a 40 acre homestead in Big Bend town. The dispute, revived after Reed’s death when his daughter reopened the claim, hinges on prior insanity and abandonment findings. Many witnesses traveled to the city for Friday morning testimony.
Unionized workers at the Menasha paper mill in Ladysmith protest the discharge of Martin Koske and demand union recognition and a 50 cent daily wage raise. The mill closes as machine tenders and beaters strike. management says repairs will finish and a new crew will run the plant, with no expected striker return. Local 95 met at Odd Fellows hall to plan further action, while officers await International guidance.
