Death of War Hero Henry Chriske in Ladysmith
Henry Chriske died at his home in Ladysmith on Sunday August 5 1920 at age 24. A military funeral at St Marys church featured a firing squad and taps by a company bugler. He was born in Stevens Point Wisconsin and enlisted with a Canadian regiment for Vimy Ridge where shrapnel injuries led to his death years later. He leaves a wife and children and was survived by multiple brothers and sisters in Michigan Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Runaway team from Carl Larson’s wagon causes city dash
A team owned by Carl Larson from five miles southeast of Ladysmith ran a lively route Wednesday forenoon. It started at the post office alley and zigzagged north on West Second Street, east on Lake Avenue, and ended at Crandell and Kapp barn. The wagon hit F. M. Doyle’s Ford near the post office, a telephone pole clipped a wheel near the Unique theater, and pedestrians fled in panic. Painter Carter narrowly missed the scene while down from a ladder. No injuries were reported.

Prohibition Whiskey Smuggling Via Aerial Drop Reported
Dr W J Manthe returned from North Dakota where residents described an aerial drop of twenty cases of whiskey in a wheat field from Canada. The liquor, retailing at twenty dollars a quart, was said to be poorer quality than earlier batches. Officials remain vigilant against smugglers, though the doctor doubts the air effort can be quickly halted.

Filling Station Construction Near Fair Store Corner
Work began this week on a Standard Oil Co filling station to be built at the corner beside the Fair Store. Excavation is done, materials on site, including cement blocks, with two 1100 gallon gasoline tanks and a 250 pound air tank powered by an automatic two horsepower motor. Otto Lee leads the Standard Oil crew. toilets and traveler conveniences are planned. Pure Oil Co will also erect a filling station this fall at Minerav and West Third streets.

A picnic on the Chippewa river near Ladysmith ends in the drowning of Mark Holdread 15 Quim Gall 24 and Oral Bell 19 while Earl Fairchild 14 is saved by Paul Greider. Head On Collision Damages Two Cars In Onalaska Area
An Imperial car owned by I Jt Johnson of Onalaska and a Ford roadster owned by Lady Smith Grocer Co and driven by George McComson of Ladysmith sustained heavy damage in a Wednesday afternoon head on collision between Tony and Glen Flora. The Ford occupants suffered nose cuts and a deep hand cut requiring stitches for George Fisher who travels for Armour with Ladysmith as his HQ. A small boy riding in the Imperial escaped injury. The crash occurred as McComson tried to dodge dust by moving to the wrong side after meeting another vehicle, leaving little time to avoid impact.

Troop K Returns from Wisconsin National Guard Camp
Troop K of the Wisconsin National Guard came home Saturday in two special coaches after two weeks at camp. Horses remain at the Ladysmith camp for other units and will be sent back next week. The unit reports a fine time and strong health aside from one member, Trooper Douglas, who is in the hospital. The Ladysmith community can take pride as Troop K posted the best showing in the governor's review with a walk trot and fast trot conducted during the event.
