Six men from Rusk County are among those named in the first draft, with selections announced by local draft officials. The list includes residents from multiple townships, signaling the start of the draft process.
Six men top the draft list for Rusk County will appear before the county board of examiners on Monday. Two of them will be chosen for army service. Names include Jim Blaine Van Patter Glen Flora Grant Alexander Smart Marshall Joseph Forchette Ladysmith Guy Wiliam MacGlothlin Ladysmith Ernest Clifford Cote Willard Ray Lyle Smith Ladysmith.
A letter from Bert Garrett reports he recently joined the Marine Corps. He traveled to Minneapolis, then Atlanta where the contingent stopped en route to Paris Island, S C. He had a fine trip and sends regards to friends, asking them to write to him at Marine Corps Barracks Paris Island S C.
Ladysmith school district census taken by Supt. L. F. Bahr shows 1166 residents of school age four to twenty, up 146 from last summer. Boys total 618, girls 548. 85 children live in Flambeau township area about to be annexed, 513 south of Soo tracks and 653 north.
The Amacoy Lake Resort run by E. V. McGill & Son attracted 78 cars last Sunday as a top outing spot for motorists in Rusk County. The Ladysmith band is set to perform next Sunday, with a Saturday dance planned as an ongoing attraction.
Grafton Johnson disposed of all Wisconsin canning factories including Cumberland Ladysmith and Clear Lake to Wilson Co meat packers of Chicago who have taken possession of the plants.
Grant, Murry and Hubbard districts begin modernizing schoolhouses with new buildings or enlargements. repairs, grounds care, and safety distances outlined. Names of teachers listed and certification rules for non residents explained. Also prizes announced for historical essays and county fair prep.
Priv. Hal G. Williams reports from Camp Douglas on August 1 1917 as trainees settle into camp life. He notes hot weather, rain cooling, new tents, typhoid vaccination with no losses, three underage soldiers discharged for home, and gifts from families. Measures for khaki uniforms underway.
Co D Swaim reports Charles Bugher in the U S Army Quartermaster told a New York note dated July 30 that the transport Saratoga was rammed and sunk in New York harbor on Sunday. He had recently moved from Brownsville to Ft Sam Houston then to New York. He lost all clothes except what he wore and is aboard another ship Finland unsure if he sails.
Mayor Thompson announced a postponement of the automobile trip to Camp Douglas following a telegram from Camp Douglas signed by Lt. Drum. The message notes Troop K is quarantined with mumps and advises people not to come Sunday.
Robert Fritz has remodelled a building on Mineray between Vaughan's clothing and Page's jewelry, purchased from Hamm Brewing Co. This spring. When remodeling ends Ed Bell will move his restaurant into the former J. P. Armstrong saloon space, and Asa Calkins will occupy the other side with a jewelry store.
A young woman of about twenty boards the Alsatia, the era’s largest steamship, at Liverpool for New York via Queenstown. She carries a ticket under the name Lucy Carteret Spinster and occupies an elegant, costly stateroom shared with an unknown woman, with only four sovereigns and change in her purse.
Instructions urge mailing to Troop K at Camp Douglas via No. 85 neon train west or No. 902 afternoon scoot south bound for fastest delivery. Mail is delivered to the boys in the forenoon daily. other trains cause a day’s delay reaching Camp Douglas.
A Ford automobile driven by John Hoff overturned Sunday afternoon four and a half miles south of the city. Mrs Kendal received minor bruises and one child was badly bruised and scratched. No permanent injuries occurred, and the car was badly damaged.
Rollo Baits writes from somewhere in France to his sister Mrs. A. C. Daniels. He reports good health aside from rheumatism and readiness for the front. He notes fatigue after travel, pride in the country, and hopes to see family soon. He asks Clara to share greetings with everyone.

Rt Rev Bishop Koudelka will lead confirmation for about seventy at 10:00 AM and 2:30 PM Sunday in Conrath Wisconsin. Fr John Hosinski who built the church will be assisted by Servite Fathers of Ladysmith and the local parish.
H Co Calkins and family longtime Ladysmith residents, after moving to Augusta Wisconsin fourteen months ago, return to Ladysmith this week. Asa Calkins plans to open a jewelry store in the former family stand, in the building Robin Fritz recently bought from Hamm Brewing Co.
Clarence Johnson, returning from Davenport Iowa aviation school visit his parents Mr and Mrs Sam Johnson. He has flown unaccompanied for three weeks reaching heights above 11000 feet and often flies at 4000 to 5000 feet. He expects to receive a commission in the aviation corps after completing his training.
The Flambeau River Lumber Co. is constructing a 56 by 128 foot storage shed for finished lumber near their dry shed on west Fritzav. A 20 foot wide central driveway will run through the structure to improve capacity and service to local patrons.
