The La Marque recreation program announces another year of varied acts and activities for residents, promising inclusive events for all ages and interest levels at city facilities throughout the season.
The Women's Golf Association of Twin Lakes held a Scotch Four some with ten couples, Zora Glowacki and John Brigance taking first place and Jean Macrini with Betty Rogers second. Winners on the last two Thursdays were Leone Rohrer and Eileen Campbell for low nets. The city recreation program runs June 10 to July 19 with multiple activities for all ages and a $1 per family charge. Registration June 3–7 in the City Hall council room.
Twenty four La Marque High School girls earned the Presidential Physical Fitness Award for the 1967 68 school year, about ten percent of the girls in these classes. The award honors strong performance on the AAHPER Youth Fitness Test and is part of a nationwide effort to promote youth fitness.
Anglers from 20 states 123 towns and one foreign country travel to Texas City for the 15th annual Tackle Time Fishing contest June 22 through July 4. Fishermen compete for class trophies and daily prize for largest speckled trout with a July 4 ticket drawing offering a Glastron boat and trailer. Tickets three for $1 or 50 cents each. entry draw requires presence with ID to win.
The La Marque Jaycee's Junior Champ Track and Field meet at La Marque High School stadium drew participants aged 11 to 18 from the district. Results show Eddie Williams won the 60 yd dash in 7.5 seconds with Clyde Bruton placing second in the junior division, among other events listed.
Track and field results list times for Prep Division ages 13 14 and Senior Division relays. Winners include McClurkin Tim in sprint events and Raymond Gamble in the 440 yard dash with top times around 66 seconds and 66.5 seconds. Relay teams led by Goodlow Dunham Patterson Watson and by Scott Simmons Gambie Frazier achieved 46.6 to 58.3 seconds.
Freddie Heraut of La Marque signs a basketball scholarship with Texas A & I at Kingsville. A three year letterman and top scorer, he averaged 17 points per game, led in steals, and earned all tournament honors. He also lettered in football, set a 104 yard interception return record, and plans to study biology pre medical.
The annual parents softball games take place at Bobby Beach Stadium on Thursday May 30. Ladies of the American and National Leagues begin at 5 30 p m with the men following after the girls finish. All parents league officials managers sponsors and wives are eligible and expected to play.
Tickets for the 1968 All Star game in Houston Astrodome go on sale to the public June 3. Sales are by mail only with postmark date required. Buyers may order up to four tickets per request.
