Mainland College Dreams Big As Second Phase Breaks Ground
Ground breaking ceremonies at College of the Mainland mark the second construction phase funded by a 4.75 million dollar bond. The expansion doubles the vocational plant to 100000 square feet and adds a physical education complex, arts, science, utilities, parking and a student center. Enrollment is about 3600 now with projected 25 percent annual growth to around 7000 by 1976.

Jerome M. McAllister La Marque optometrist was elected president of the Mainland College Board at the April 26 meeting. An eight year resident, McAllister has served on the board for two years. April Fire Department Report Highlights Trash Fires
An April report by E. S. Collerain of the La Marque Volunteer Fire Department shows trash fires tripling other categories with 12 calls. There were 4 house fires, 4 grass fires, and 3 motor vehicle fires, totaling 23 April calls. year to date alarms reach 87.

Andra Mitrovich a 4 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Milton L Mitrovich of 1103 Spruce was first runner up in the La Petite division at the 1971 Galveston Our Little Miss Pageant held Saturday night at Lovenberg Middle School. Sherif Lynn Martin of Friendswood won La Petite. Rhonda Lynn Perkins of Seabrook was second runner up. In the Our Little Miss group for ages 7 through 12 Georganna Bivens of Texas City was crowned Our Little Miss with Paula Compton of Galveston first runner up and Robin Ringer of Texas City second runner up.

Jaycees to Conduct Eye Screening Test May 8
The La Marque Jaycees and the Better Vision Institute launch a campaign to detect amblyopia in children ages four to six. Free screening runs Saturday May 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Queen of Peace School on Cedar Drive under the supervision of two local eye doctors. Amblyopia risks are highlighted as preventable yet often undetected due to low parental awareness.
