Quartet keeps America singing in Galveston barbershop group

The Galveztones, Galveston chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, promote good fellowship and charity through four part harmony. Led by Reed H. McLemore, the 20 member group ages 15 to 70 perform at nursing homes, civic groups, and the Strand Festival, supporting the Institute of Logopedics in Wichita. Membership open to any male over 15 who can carry a tune, meeting Mondays at 7 30 p.m. at La Marque First Presbyterian Church.

Citizens to pay for sewer line repairs drive

Deadline nears for La Marque residents to repair private sewer lines after letters sent May first reach over 300 homeowners. Repairs must be completed within 30 days to avoid charges. City tests found 430 private lines needing work. 175 remain unrepaired. Homeowners may DIY or hire a licensed plumber. permits required. Churches and businesses must use licensed plumbers.

Boys Club of the Mainland Sustains Activities at Mayhan Park

The Boy's Club of the Mainland at Mayhan Park provides educational and recreational programs for low income boys aged 6 to 17. Executive director Bobby Smith notes activities range from macrame to archery and says donations are needed after buying a van. The club plans a July 1 trip to Houston to see the Astros vs. Braves and has started free lunches funded by USDA Galveston County C.A.P. Volunteers are welcomed. contact Bobby Smith at 938-8284.
