Police investigate a burglar threat that endangered youths in La Marque during a Sunday incident at the Feigle residence. Officers report the intruder startled two young men who glimpsed the suspect through a window and fled.
Swingston Indians of Texas announce reopening plans for Tombigbee Lake Camp and the Living Indian Village. The Big Thicket Tour will extend to new roads through virgin forest and swamps. Activities begin Labor Day at 9 a.m. daily with weekend hours and Sunday 12:30 to 6 p.m. on U.S. Highway 100 near Alabamas reservation north of Houston.
The notice calls for bids for cleaning at the Post Office facility at 609 rel. The contract runs from July to June 30 1972. Bid packages available from the Postmaster or Assistant Postmaster. Bids due by 5 p.m. at the Postmaster’s office.
The Galveston County Concerned Citizens Council will host a meeting July 16 at 7 30 p m in the Nessler Center Surf Room. Craig Foster executive director of the Galveston County Research Council will discuss tax equalization reform and the need for uniform property tax rules across Galveston County. He will review a Hitchcock pilot study and alternatives to the property tax system while noting the county has 338 taxing agencies and disparate assessment practices.
The Bridge at 1727 Avenue G marks one year since opening to runaway teens serving as a halfway house. More than 200 youths found refuge and about 60 troubled families received counseling, with local police noting an average of one runaway daily on the island. The ecumenical nonprofit is led by a 14 member board including Dr Lafayette Williams as chair and aims to provide a broad spectrum of youth services.
Rev William R. Dunaway announces regular counseling and planning sessions at the Bridge. He notes the past year saw service to more than 200 families, calls community support a sacred trust, and invites the public to an open house on Thursday June 10 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Legislature votes to submit 14 proposed amendments to voters in November 1972. Highlights include HJR 61 for a constitutional revision convention, HJR 58 and HJR 95 raise legislator and officer salaries, plus measures on governor terms, anti-discrimination rights, homestead tax relief, newspaper advertising rules for amendments, veterans exemptions, school funding, and public board service. Jobless rate drops to 8.8 percent with 181000 unemployed. liquor tax on the drink passes in early special session with a 10 percent gross receipts levy.
The legislature increased liquor and wine taxes and beer taxes, boosting revenue by about 28 million for the next two years. A new Air Control Board rule requires construction permits for facilities that may emit contaminants, plus operating permits before startup. Mental Health grants totaling 260,795 were approved for multiple counties and boards.
State Representative Don Cavness will report on new Texas environmental legislation and a panel of officials from Atlanta, Graham and Lockhart will discuss last year’s Governor's Community Achievement Awards. Keep America Beautiful’s Roger Powers will address litter and waste issues. A youth participation panel and Lamar Tech's Charles D. Cramer will explore pollution studies. Registration June 18 at Villa Capri Motor Hotel with $6 lunch and awards by Governor Smith.
County fair schedule lists breeding hog and sheep judging, showmanship, beef judging, lamb and chicken scrambles, barbecues, carnival, tractor driving, livestock judging, and rodeo across Thursday to Saturday with times from morning into night. Arabian Horse Show appears Saturday with queen contest finals and additional livestock events. Local events include pig scramble and barbecue and various livestock-related activities.

Several ministers move within Galveston County and Dickinson while districts name new superintendents and assign pastors to La Marque, Texas City, Alta Loma, Hitchcock, and Wilbur Chapel.
