In 1926 the narrator, aged 18, joins a Wyoming National Guard Calvary camp near Pole Mountain. A boxing challenge leads to a staged bout refereed by an camp assistant named George Mabe, ending with the narrator badly beaten but save for courtesy words from his opponent. The tale blends camp life, mountains, and a shaky start to Wyoming ties.
The Greater Texas City La Marque Chamber announces Western Week from June 3 to 5 featuring an Open Horse Show Playday and the First Annual KUFO Texas Olympics at Kohfeldt Arena Texas City. Events include a Kiddie Power Parade Little Mr and Miss Western Week beard growing contest dances and a parade with activities in Nessler Center Knights of Columbus Hall and local banks.
La Marque City Council Workshop discussed EMS funding and county county-wide study. Proposed sewer rate changes to fund a new plant include a minimum 2.47 dollar bill with surcharges based on usage, eyeing a long term 10 dollar bill for 10,000 gallons and above. Officials favor the long term plan to align with the budget, while ensuring low users do not overpay. Plans with the Corps of Engineers on the seawall access were also reviewed, plus parade events and a three day Western Week at Kohfeldt Ranch, with shooting, arts and crafts, and rodeo activities.
Know your policeman Sgt Gene Olivier of the La Marque Police Department has served six years and been a sergeant since November 1974. He sits on the Mainland Boy's Club Board as President and Vice President, coaches the La Marque Tigers in the Texas Youth Football Conference, and his team is undefeated with 30 wins and 0 losses. He holds Basic Certification in Law Reinforcement Standards and Education, attended College of the Mainland, and has spoken at civic church and youth events. In 1973 he was named Junior Officer of the Year by the La Marque Jaycees. He and his wife Georgia live in Texas City with three children Gene Jr 14 Genetria 10 and Patrick 5. They attend Queen of Peace Church in La Marque.
