All Star Lineup At Meyer Speedway
Meyer Speedway prepared for a Saturday race card featuring an all star lineup. Director Ed Hamblem announced that Freddie Fryar of Baton Rouge, last year’s Late-model top contender, and Joe Holley, the reigning late model champion who placed fourth in the Permatex 300 at Daytona, will attend. Holley will race his late model Chevrolet and a rear engine four wheel drive supermodified owned by Bill Hite of Jackson Alabama.

Two Houston youths led the 5th Annual Pepsi KIKK State Surfing Championship at Galveston Island. Craig Hunt aged 16 won the grand prize 4A men earning a trip to Huntington Beach California. Connie Coffelt aged 19 won the same prize in Girls 4A. Liz Bray placed second in Girls 4A winning a color TV. Mike Reinschmidt of Galveston placed second in Men's 4A winning a Honda motorcycle. Alfred Carries Cougar Hopes in Regional Track Meet
La Marque's Alfred Douglas will lead the Cougars at the regional track and field meet in Houston Baker Stadium after qualifying with a district long jump record of 22 feet 8 inches. He ran 9.6 seconds in prelims of the 100 yard dash but slipped at the start in finals for a 10.0 finish. The 440 yard relay team of Douglas, Gary Davis, Mike Williams, and Chris Marshall posted 43.1 for fourth. Henry Westmoreland vaulted 12 feet for fifth, while Jimmie Foy and a Texas City runner collided in the mile relay as La Marque finished seventh with 24 points. Sterling dominated the district with 143 points.

Former WCJC star Tom McNeill now with the Minnesota Vikings will keynote the annual Wharton County Junior College All Sports Banquet on Thursday May 6. Athletic director Gene Bahnsen says McNeill will relate his Wharton memories and pro football experience to current Pioneers. Bahnsen notes McNeill was a punter split end and quarterback for WCJC from 1968 to 1964 and earned a TJCAC All Conference basketball slot.
