Theodore Roosevelt was elected temporary chairman of the New York Republican convention after a heated contest to back Roosevelt against Sherman and the Old Guard. Police cleared the hall before the roll call showed Roosevelt 567 to Sherman 445, with delegates shrieking approval as Roosev elt secured the position.
