Report notes a good coal mine 12 miles from the Grande Ronde river mouth. A tunnel extends 185 feet with a shaft 1 foot deep at 135 feet from the tunnel entrance. Tests indicate lignite quality suitable for steaming and blacksmithing, spanning a five mile area along the river.
G George Maretall, 19, pleaded guilty in State Circuit Court to attempting to extort Kasper Van Dran by sending threatening letters after the death of his wife. He faces six months to two years in the state penitentiary or three months to one year in the county jail, with sentencing set for tomorrow.
Owners plan to raise the freight steamer Jerome after wrecking in west rapids below Boake river mouth Saturday afternoon. A gasplo g hole in the bow is the main damage, the hull may be punctured, and the vessel rests about 10 feet deep with deck submerged. An experienced boatman will attempt to save the ship and unload the wheat cargo before tow to shallow water for repairs.

A blaze engulfed the Iowa Odd Fellows Home in Manon City causing total loss valued at 606000. Forty five orphans and thirteen aged residents were removed from the site by responders after the fire, with all lives spared though the event proved deadly for homes and shelter providers.
