Nels Halverson Found Guilty of Bootlegging

Judge Angus Stewart convicts Nels Halverson of Hilgard of selling liquor and giving it away. A $250 fine plus up to 125 days jail, with an appeal filed and bond set at 2500. Halverson seeks bondsmen for retrial as a new shingle mill rises in Clatskanie with 35 000 daily capacity.

Sangoose Society Girl Hatfield Hatch Victim of Fatal Operation

Miss Hatfield Hatch aged 20, daughter of a prominent chandist near San Joss California, died from blood poisoning after a criminal operation. L. Dr. 8 and Abbo and a physician are jailed as an investigation proceeds. Abbo reportedly confessed to performing the operation on the girl.

In Tokyo on September 11, Japanese business leaders condemn government postponement of the exposition. The Business Men's association accuses fair management of graft and threatens a rival industrial fair in 1912 if cabinet resignation or restart is not achieved.

Dominion Land Rush Paralyzes Central Canada

Thousands rush to settle newly opened Dominion lands as a cloudburst disrupts rail service. About ten thousand passengers are stranded between Winnipeg and Thunder Bay as over twenty transcontinental trains are blocked by washouts. Communications are down and relief efforts may take days. A separate note reports Eugene W. Chafin, Prohibition candidate for president, arriving in Seattle and receiving a welcome at the Commercial Club.

Bryan Liberal With Promises to Call Extra Session

William Jennings Bryan spoke at the North Dakota fairgrounds promising to fulfill Democratic platform pledges and, if elected, to call an immediate extra session of Congress to push his proposed reforms. He received a large ovation from the Bryan Kern Club and greeted supporters at the fairgrounds before traveling to Grand Forks for an evening address.

In Butte on September 1 Belle Gilchrist, owner of a mine and linked to Nome Alaska, is reported killed by her former husband L A Johnson who was arrested in Seattle. Police investigate as Johnson allegedly cut, buried, and burned evidence to avoid belief of suicide.
