The opening of the government land lottery in Dallas drew thousands of applicants. May A. Metzer of Kennebec South Dakota was first named, granting her the first choice of land. Little girls drew applications from a platform as crowds cheered.
Republicans set to finish county campaign with top speakers including Judge Henry McGinn of Portland who will speak in La Grande on October 30.
L L Boyse an electrician, enraged by a Statesman article, smashed plate glass at the paper’s office in Walla Walla. He fought police when apprehended. The article allegedly claimed he was taking another woman to the fair grounds while his wife and children were destitute.
Reno, Nevada reports alarm at news of a second Mormon settlement to be established in the state near Reno. Church representatives are surveying land and expect to locate the colony by spring.
Word from Painterville reports George Stafford and his three children burned in his home last night. Mrs. Stafford tried to escape by jumping from the second floor, breaking her neck.

Edward Martin convicted of killing Nathan Wolff in a Portland pawnshop last summer announced he will serve a manslaughter term to fight a morphine addiction. He said he may accept up to 16 years if the sentence is not excessive.
A mass meeting of Servians in San Francisco outlined enlisting sympathy for the Bosnia and Herzegovina annexation protest movement. Leader Miaden Merchop, ex Austrian lieutenant, says 4000 Servians on the Pacific coast may enlist. 285 already have. A Santa Fe collision near Braddock Kansas involving a passenger train and freight train left one crew member dead and 22 passengers injured. The crash occurred today as cars were hurled from the tracks and witnesses described chaotic scenes with emergency crews responding quickly.
