Arrangements for the Friday spelling contest are nearly complete with about 40 selected spellers expected. Baker City Superintendent Churchill will attend to pronounce, and La Grande’s J. D. Stout will conduct a grade tryout to ensure countywide representation.
J G Wagner buys 40 acres from B M Sherwood of Logan Sherwood Realty for 6000 dollars. Land near Hermiston was sage brush country but water is available. Sherwood plans to stay the week and will join his alma mater the La Grande band while here.
Mrs W M Ramsey learned this morning that her mother Mrs Julia Johnson of Seattle is seriously ill. Ramsey will depart tonight for Seattle. her mother is over eighty years old.
Notice says funds exist in the La Grande treasury to pay all general fund warrants up to No 7180 endorsed Oct 30 07 and interest ceases from this date. Water fund warrants can also be paid. city treasurer notes funds on hand. Sept 28.

The Union County Board of Equalization will meet at the La Grande county courthouse on Monday October 18 1909 to examine and correct the 1909 assessment rolls. Mrs. W. M. Stoker of Union Oregon testifies that Doan's Kidney Pills provide relief from kidney trouble including backache and acute kidney attacks. She recommends the remedy to others similarly affected and notes the product is sold by all dealers at 60 cents with Foster Milburn Co as US agents.
