Scriber Remains in Portland Despite Return Fears

J W Scrib­er former cashier of First & Traders National Bank Grande released on 46 000 bonds says he will stay in Portland indefinitely. He is not afraid to return to La Grande but has no future plans. Officials say rumors claim a shortage of 123 000, with bonds set at 15 000 on forgery count and 25 000 on a second count.

Annual Convention of Federated Women’s Clubs Opens in La Grande

The United States Court of Appeals denied a rehearing on the $29,000,000 Standard Oil fine linked to rebates from the Chicago and Aston road. The decision, by Judges Groscup Baker and Beaman, blocks further review and may push the case to the U S Supreme Court.

Commercial Club Advances Apple Exhibit Plan

The La Grande Commercial Club proposed immediate purchase of 200 boxes of choice apples for Seattle Fair display and urged Union County to contribute at least 100 boxes. David Eccles Hiero to drum up irrigation as county groups rally to support exhibits and a regional push ahead of the Alaska-Tukon-Pacific fair next year. Hood River reportedly has 200 boxes ready for exhibition.

San Francisco on November 10 a physician identified as Dr J J Black by James Gibson of Cove Oregon as the surgeon who performed an operation blamed for the death of Venta Van Vinack of La Grande The coroner asked the doctor to speak and he offered no comment Gibson testified about relations and marriage attempts in Cove and San Francisco before the fatal operation autopsy surgeon Clark testified that the girl died from a bungled crime driven procedure.
