Whitman College in Walla Walla announces a significant growth in its engineering program under Dean Wayne Darlington. Next year doubles chemistry space and adds practical mineralogy and assaying, with new physics courses tailored for engineers. City notices include sewer ordinances for La Grande Oregon.
Right Rev. Bishop Robert L. Paddock urged uniting several small town churches into one central body under one pastor with a chosen staff, to fund a $2,000 salary and superior facilities. He proposed timed services appealing to all denominations, though no action was taken. The conference elected Rev. Bertram A. Warren secretary with delegates from Pendleton The Dalles La Grande Baker Hood River and Weston.
Prof EB D Ressler spoke to students and the public at the Union County High School about loyalty to the Oregon Agricultural College in Corvallis and urged teachers to attend the National Education Association convention in San Francisco. He noted 14 Union County students attended Corvallis summer school, the most outside the Willamette valley, and praised the Observer contest for expanding teaching opportunities.
A Madison May 19 letter warns against criticizing the government, claiming post office powers could shut publishers down. It notes La Follette’s attacks on Hitchcock and other publishers, calling the situation intolerable and a threat to press freedom.

Sheriff Ed Marvin of Wallowa County escorted a man named Jess Carpenter through the city this morning. Carpenter is accused of deserting his family at Lostine and was in custody on the way home.
At a Baker commercial club meeting a movement was discussed to petition for enlarging the federal building. The current structure is deemed too small for Baker’s growth, with offices in use by forestry and civil service not fully accommodated. A federal court and a larger post office area were noted as future needs, but the plan was described as premature for now.
Whitman College in Walla Walla releases a 125 page catalogue with changes in courses and requirements. It introduces a new engineering program with strict entrance standards in algebra and trigonometry and drops the B L degree removing the Greek prerequisite for the B A.
In a fragmentary report a prisoner claims capturing Carpenter at Dayton and being sent to Salem where he learned of Carpenter’s capture and took the man in charge.
