Professor E P Kipely of Harvard told the senate committee that current laws fail to stop secret rebate discrimination and railroads yet practice elusive abuses. He acknowledged reasonable freight ratios but said rates rise through subtle classifications and safeguards for shippers have vanished.
In Chicago May 5 15 Shippy testified Hoch confessed on Feb 9 and 11 to using arsenic to dispose of his wives. Defense closes at 2 pm presenting Dr Gustave Kolisher to counter the arsenic theory and suggest Walker Hoch may have absorbed arsenic from cemetery soil. Jury deliberations begin Wednesday.
Central Church of Christ hosts a 25 cent flight across the continent fundraiser on Tuesday May 16. Children will sell tickets and provide a small program to raise funds. Proceeds support church activities and outreach programs.
Herbert W Bowen, recently removed as minister to Venezuela over charges raised against Loomis, reports to President Taft. He meets the President briefly, receives Loomis responses and papers, and is to prepare a formal reply for Taft. Taft will present the matter to the President for decision.
The naval prize court at Sasebo confiscated the British steamer Sylviana captured February 20 bound for Vladivostok with Cardiff coal.
Washington May 15 Admiral Dewey’s condition, after being taken ill in New York last Saturday, was reported to have improved considerably by last evening as doctors monitor his recovery.
Mrs C N Lewis died May 12 at her home in Hilgard and was interred yesterday at the Masonic cemetery after funeral services at the Bt Petara church. Rev Hibb preached the sermon. Mrs Lewis was a member of the United Artisans Starkey Resembley No 127. Burial was by the order’s members. W L McMillian F F Jones J B Ayers Thomas Loftus J C Brigge Wm Briggs attended. A large crowd from Starkey attended to pay respects. A R French of the Cove la was visiting the county seat.
Chicago May 15 A tentative move to reverse a vote by the teamsters joint counsel to stand firm against delivering to boycotted homes is reported as Ponca talks gain steam. Rumors say the international brotherhood executive board meets in Chicago tomorrow to back relief and curb strike spread.
President Shea telegraphed President Gompera arranging a meeting of the National Board in Chicago at week’s end. The Teamsters board will be in session about Wednesday and a settlement appears likely as AFL funds are requested to support organized labor.
Wren asserts the Eli Te crush the Teameters organization could win if financial support arrives. A hundred Western Union messengers were struck today as coal was delivered to the company by non union drivers. Pupils from three public schools joined the strike over non union coal deliveries. Riot calls were answered from Hendricks and Carpenter schools and several arrests were made.
The steamer Jasene reports sighting thirteen Russian war vessels off Cape Varella north of Honkuhe Bay on May 12. The report adds no detail on casualties or fate of the ships.
Tokio reports the new Russian fleet left Houkohe bay on May 8 and has since returned to that bay where it remains anchored.
A Japanese transport was sunk today by a mine in the Gulf of Pechili. The accompanying transport Sheyatemaru also went down. Survivors were rescued and taken to Port Arthur.
About eighty thousand Japanese troops have arrived at the front with strengthened cavalry. Skirmishing persists on the Russian left wing while no moves occur on the right. General Oyama directs large troop concentrations from Fakomen to Tounziakon as a pontoon bridge is built across the river. Russian forces wear summer uniforms.
Mr Preston Seared gave his last lecture titled A winter in Switzerland on Saturday to a pleased audience. The talk highlighted vivid word pictures of Swiss life and scenery and the freedom and lawabiding home life of the people. Mr Beard will lecture on Parsifal tonight after traveling to Sumpter for future talks. He plans many university lectures, eastward travel, and a coast tour delivering art lectures at several colleges and cities. C Mipple and Jas Ward, Haber City mining men, discussed Grande Ronde mining property.
A liquor crazed house cleaner, Scripps News Association reports, killed four people and wounded a fifth before shooting himself. The assailant entered rooms at a Second Street tenement, murdering a youth, his mother, a carpenter, and Doddridge’s son, then wounded Doddridge before taking his own life.
President Gompera of the AFL received a telegram reporting that the Porto Rico agricultural strike has ended satisfactorily. Fourteen thousand laborers went on strike, securing a 30 percent wage increase and a nine hour day.
Vienna on May 15 reports fifty persons injured in a celluloid dam age fire explosion at the French Celluloid Plant. The fire chief and several firemen were hurt among others as a large crowd pressed in near the blaze.
