Portland May 7 Mrs Bidward wailed outside the cell of Edward Martin as detectives guard him in a murder case tied to a pawnshop stock theft and a missing rifle. An insane drug use claim, New York attorneys, and a blood stained overcoat are noted.
Officers attempted to induce a confession from Martin by offering a bribe and a drug injection. He refused to speak further, turned away, and remained quiet as authorities, exhausted by efforts to break his resolve, finally administered the injection to his weakened system Powis 4A.
Wrecking crew set freight wreck right after a wheel broke on an eastbound freight at Glover. The crew worked about three hours to clear the line allowing No 6 to pass. Four lives were lost in a New York tenement fire of incendiary origin this morning with many injured.
Oregon commission ordered new freight rates to be effective last Sunday but the La Grande O R and N freight department continues shipping under old schedule. Shippers await the new tariff covering points east of The Dalles and the local office remains bound to old rates until the railroad curves release a fresh tariff. The observer noted the changes and their sectional impact, with city residents watching for further action.
Governor Chamberlain arrived in Union from Eagle Valley this afternoon to a large crowd with liberal music. He opened his address at 2 o clock and will reach La Grande later this afternoon.
No more bodies were found at the Gunnes farm in La Porte Indiana today though investigators press on. Besale Conklin of Michigan City is the sole arrested suspect and she says Ray Lamphere threatened to burn the farm. Six watches were recovered including a woman's watch. Some victims show fractured skulls and others died by poison. Sheriff Smutser travels to Chicago for talks on a possible Chicago murder ring using the farm as a disposal site.
Chicago May 7. Rumor says Democratic leaders plan to drop Bryan and push Folk if Bryan cannot secure two thirds of delegates. If Johnson cannot reach one third, Folk would be offered the Missouri and Massachusetts support for Bryan. Boston May 7. Massachusetts democrats endorse Bryan and pledge their delegation to him.
The Interior Department cuts to a single, shorter form for homesteads desert lands and timber and stone entries. Beginning the 16th all applications must use the same style blank. The change affects publication of affidavits and all land classes formerly filled on separate forms.

The Atlantic fleet reception in San Francisco honored Bob Evans and fallen servicemembers with flowers and cheers. Evans endured pain but bowed to the crowd as Governor Gillette and officials saluted. Mrs Johnson of South La Gronde remains ill.
Two young ranchers discovered the body of Mrs. Anna Aldrich in a hole beneath a tree on the North Fork. Three Barnes brothers, ages 18, 26 and 16, are jailed on suspicion of complicity after her disappearance last Friday. A $1000 reward is posted for her recovery dead or alive as the town braces for possible mob action.
Chief Jones was reelected by an overwhelming vote as head of the La Grande fire department. The department and Rescue Hose Company No 1 voted in annual and early year elections with officers named including Jackson as foreman, Bay as second foreman, Snodgrass as president, Jordan as secretary, and Bay as treasurer.
The thermometer fell from 75 degrees at 6 PM to 39 degrees overnight, dipping by 41 degrees after a brief rise to 80 degrees earlier in the night. Weather observers note the sharp cold snap affecting the area.
