Collision Off Hakodate Sinks Mutsu Maru. 266 Dead

Off Hakodate early today the steamers Mutsu Maru and the Hideyoshi Maru collided. The Mutsu Maru sank with the captain and 244 passengers. later reports raise drowned to 266, 220 passengers and the rest crew. The Hideyoshi Maru suffered lighter damage as passengers leaped into the sea.

Congress man Littlefield Resigns From Congress

Congressman C E Littlefield resigns from the Maine delegation to resume law practice. A close friend says he will join western railroads with a salary of 30000 dollars a year. The resignation is sent to Governor Cobb and is effective September 30.

Kean Elected to Fill Dingley Term in Maine Congress

Kean of Rockland Maine was elected to fill the unexpired term of the late Congressman Dingley and was reelected to the fifty eighth fifty and sixtieth congresses. Bids for a new federal building at Grand Rapids Michigan will be opened tomorrow after a liberal appropriation by Congress. A meeting of the Geaboard Airline voting trust in Richmond Virginia was called for tomorrow at which time the trust will dissolve itself.

Falls 40 Feet In Canyon Rescue

Harry Lineberger, son of a Ladd County resident, fell about 40 feet in Ladd Canyon while with friends. He slid down a steep incline about 100 yards, suffering a skull fracture and a broken elbow, with a body bruised but stable. He is at Grande Howe Hospital and expected to recover. The accident occurred during a hillside outing and is described as a remarkable near miss. Continued on page 8.

Federation Loses Ban on Buck Stove Boycott in DC Court

American adviser shot by unknown Korean in San Francisco

P W Stevens an American adviser to both American and Japanese governments on Korea was shot and badly wounded by an unknown Korean who attacked him in the Fairmount hotel lobby. Four Koreans involved were driven off as Stevens was leaving for the Ferry Building. A second Korean accompanying the shooter was also wounded when a bullet struck him. Authorities say the assault followed Stevens praise of Japanese protectorate in recent interviews.
