Federal grand jury files reveal indictments against Eastes Oregon lumber interests including Eeeles Barton Geddes and others. Most suspects are held on secret charges related to grinding and holding activities with details not yet known as the investigation proceeds.
David Eccles billionaire sugar magnate and president of the Sumpter Valley road is indicted along with Grant Geddes manager, Joseph Barton former manager, F. M. Shurtliff superintendent, A. H. Atkinson head bookkeeper, W. A. Green timber cruiser, and J. R. Smurthwright office clerk of the same company.
Grant Geddes Joseph Barton and James R Smurth wing of Baker City and officers of the Oregon Lumber company and Sumpter Valley railroad were arrested on indictments returned yesterday by the Federal Grand Jury for alleged violation of the land To Debate Railways. Lewiston Maine debates railroads tonight between Bates College and College of the City of New York over physical valuation of interstate railways.
Defendants tied to David Eccles and timber interests in Eastern Oregon face indictments from a government inquiry into acquisition of timber lands by lumber and railway firms led by Redesia. Bonds set at $5000 each, with bail likely for associates. grand jury continues work as other names and entities are expected to be named in Baker City and beyond.
