At dawn in Washington the Senate reached a tentative agreement on the tariff bill and moved toward final votes on naval appropriations totaling 25 million. Debate over Peary reward and reciprocity loomed, while Friar land graft claims were deemed unproven as officials faced clearance from land sale restrictions.
Mrs Hannah Kelley wife of George W. Kelley Jr died this morning after several days of suffering from bowel complications at 2006 First Street. She would have reached sixty on the 20th. Survived by husband and six children including B A Benham La Grande and G W Kelley Jr. Funeral from the home Sunday at 2 oclock with local pallbearers listed.
One of a notorious box car gang was arrested by Chief Walden and Detective Woods. The suspect, found with excess trousers and seven or eight pats, is held for questioning regarding railroad depredations and headquarters activity. Detective Woods will return from Pendleton to continue the inquiry.
Several upper classmen at the high school face possible expulsion after being linked to hazing freshmen, who had their hair cut in an upper-class style. Faculty members monitor the affair and may suspend offenders.
Rome reports a scandal involving Queen Helena’s lady in waiting Countess Giulia di Trigona killed by Lieutenant Paterno. The king contemplates censuring the queen for tolerating the affair as Paterno dies while allegedly blackmailing the countess with a demand for 400000 dollars to settle debts.
Helena March 3 Judge Henry Meyers a Democrat chosen on the last of seventy nine ballots to succeed Senator Carter of Montana. His election came just in time to prevent the legislature expiring by constitutional limits. Meyers is a well known lawyer.
The local brotherhood of Trainmen elected H. W. Dodendorf as treasurer to fill the vacancy left by H. C. Ludiker. Mr Ludiker resigned recently to focus on other business matters.
Dick Smith, a leading galley farmer in the city, says crop prospects are excellent. He notes extensive spring seeding of blue atom wheat will boost acreage and expects unusually good crops next season due to favorable winter weather conditions.
Reports from Haines say detectives scale the search as rumors grow that the Ed McCollouch murderers fled by train from Telecaset toward North Powder. Authorities hold two men in North Powder as potential suspects while others say the trail remains open and trains may have carried the fugitives away.
Richard Crane in Valve World rebukes Andrew Carnegie for claims of divine call to armor plate making. Crane says Carnegie pursued profit and charged government six cents per pound, far above steel price.
