Senator Miles Poindexter seeks presidential records on alleged Morgan Guggenheim push to control Alaskan coal via Controller Bay and Water Trout, aiming to expose filings by James Ryan and associates as part of a possible monopoly that would influence Alaska railroads.
Niagara Falls opens the second International Carnival with a two day program starting with a military parade. Evening activities include an illuminated automobile parade and a reenactment of the burning of the Steamer Caro line. Queenston hosts a Laura Secord monument unveiling next week accompanied by speakers.
Fire destroyed a livery barn and adjoining properties including hay and six horses. Valuations listed include the barn, hay, horses, and Mrs. property loss with total figures implied. The incident caused property damage to nearby structures.
Fire of unknown origin damaged the Union livery barns for a loss of 3110 with six horses cremated and adjoining property badly scorched. Low water pressure stretched the fire department to its limit but only the barn burned. smaller structures suffered little. Insurance stood at about 1000.

Heavy rains last night made roads impassable delaying the Union County Commercial Club planned trip into Wallowa county. Mr Duncan came from Cove to join but roads were too bad. the delegation will try Thursday and Friday weather permitting. The downpour damaged alfalfa in swaths and shocks.
Portland reports a fire at Union Oil yesterday, spurring calls to move storage tanks to the outskirts. Fire Chief Campbell, the only killed, will have funeral services from the Elks Club where he was a member.
Fire Department Chief David Campbell was cremated after a major fire in Portland. Battalion Chief Stevens and his wife, visiting in the city, hurried home on a telegram to mourn Campbell and aid in temporary company re arrangements. Stevens, one of four battalion chiefs, left with Young injured in the blaze.
La Grande will end dual telephone service next Saturday as the amalgamation to one system is aimed for by July first. Superintendent Crowe sets July first for the change and the old Home line will be discontinued. The new network will cover La Grande Union Cove Elgin and Wallowa County with long distance access and a revised directory to be issued Saturday. The Pacific company had skipped February directory cycles leaving many customers with wrong or missing numbers. this will be resolved after the change.
Joseph F. Smith, president of the Mormon church, testified before the Hanwick Sugar Trust committee in Washington on June 27. He owned 5,000 Utah Idaho Sugar shares personally and 49,815 shares for the church, receiving seven percent dividends used by the church. He endorsed the legality of the Havemeyer partnership and stated threats prompted his appearance after earlier physical manner concerns. He traveled to Washington from Salt Lake City to testify.
Arrangements are made to transport H Lane to St Vincent Hospital this evening. Dr C T Bacon will accompany Lane from La Grande after the accident at the sand house in the railroad yards yesterday afternoon. Lane suffered a fractured leg and complications have raised the seriousness of his condition.
Bedford Springs hosts the opening day of the annual Pennsylvania State Bar association meeting running through Thursday. An unusually large attendance is expected with a three day program featuring many items of interest to bar members. Governor A. J. Montague of Virginia is slated to deliver the principal address.
Owensboro Kentucky June 27 The Kentucky Educational Association opens a three day session with focus on creating schools suited to educate Kentucky rural populations. Distinguished educators from across the state attend as Prof T J Crates of Richman presides and speakers include Thos B McGregor Franfort assistant attorney general and others address the gathering.
London reports the royal garden party at Buckingham Palace as one of the most brilliant events on coronation celebrations. Nearly all foreign ambassadors colonial representatives and other distinguished guests attended. Women wore magnificent dresses.
