In an early morning incident a president in Louisiana was killed in a confrontation with a burglar who was fatally shot during the fight at the president’s home. Police investigation underway.
I Rawn president of the Chicago Indianapolis and Louisville railroad was shot and killed by a burglar in his Winnetka home. The attack occurred in the dining room after he investigated a noise. A gun cartridge was fired and bloodstains were found near the scene as police tracked suspects amid reports the intruder was wounded and hiding nearby.
Seatte July 20 Conductor Gilbertson of Alki Point turned his car and handed the dispatcher a tin box containing 2,000 dollars worth of jewels found on the car. Reverend H Poland reported a robbery on a streetcar while en route to the bank to deposit valuables in a safety deposit vault.
Victoria notes rich ore finds from the Bugabo district near the Bugaboo property. Sematite and magnetic ore are located with a hematite vein over 100 feet wide, described as one of the district’s largest yet and surpassing coastal finds.
Jack McLaughlin the Illinois Central freight agent is in La Grande today. He has personally supervised loading of about 330 cars of wool from Eastern Oregon and a North Power shipment, with more work remaining in Wallowa county.
Telegrams allegedly from President Madriz ordered the execution of revolutionary prisoners, including Americans. Brickwork nearly finished on the Lewis building at Washington between Fourth and Depot streets. The structure, slated for the Dittibrant Garage company, awaits carpenters while the one story masonry portion approaches completion.
Mrs. W. 8. Knepper and Mrs. Carrie Snender of Carrol Iowa have finished a week long visit with Mrs. W. H. Bohnenkamp and will depart for home via Portland in the morning.

Summerville resident Miss Violete Chattin was successfully operated on this morning at Grande Ronde hospital by Doctor Molitor.
Scotland Yard says Doctor Crippen an American dentist accused of murdering his wife is located in England and will be arrested before nightfall. Police have watched him to confirm his identity and make sure of the case before taking action. Reports mention no police confirmation of a Frenchwoman alleged as his accomplice.
Wallace Idaho July 20 Pine Creek fire still uncontained with towns evacuated as crews dig trenches and battle the blaze. Foresters warn drought could exhaust timber supplies while other mines report fatalities from a shaft accident of four men.
Report from Nelson July 0 states Thre Forks is totally destroyed by forest fires with residents fleeing to mountain peaks. Unconfirmed word says Sandon is surrounded and doomed while Baynes Lake and Jaffay in Crow district are burned. Nelson fires were diverted by government foresters. Edward Lucas, a miner, was found.
Seattle reports a heavy smoke pall from forest fires around Lake Washington. Fires are centered on logged off lands with a fierce blaze at the Mack Logging company camp near Hoquiam.
C. T. Hackett and G. W. Hyatt of Enterprise traveled through La Grande with the Wallowa county delegation en route to Portland for the state Republican assembly. The Baker City group also passed through in a private car, with nearly all delegates accompanying the party.
North Powder farmer L C Kelsoey plans to reclaim 1200 acres by building a private ditch. Work will start soon with hopes to advance reclamation well into next spring.

Chicago July 20 officials announced the National Conservation congress will meet in St Paul in September. Taft and Roosevelt will speak and Senator Clapp Nelson and others are listed as speakers. Attorney Brandeles who represented Glavis will not address the congress.
New York July 20. Mayor Gaynor ordered all night lunch counters restaurants and cafes on Broadway shut after a personal investigation. He concluded action was in the city’s best interests. During the visit a woman spoke endearingly to him and another group invited him to join them unaware of his identity.
North Yakima reports a fire last night at the Mc Carthur suit house causing about 2000 dollars damage. Ned Hopkins, a baseball player, fell through the burning roof while fighting the blaze and was badly burned but rescued and expected to recover.
Government appraiser Gus A. Loergeren, a special agent of the United States Land Office, is in the county today. He notes the dispute over differing appraisal methods since the government set its own timber valuation, calling for a balance of equity and fairness for applicants.
Jose Roen and C. Martines were shot during breakfast by an accidental discharge from B. F. Casey's gun at the Arcade cafe. They were hospitalized with non serious wounds. The incident occurred about 9 am near the east end of the bar.
The home of W. R. Jones at O and Seventh is rapidly forming a frame as the superstructure nears completion. The dwelling will be modern in every respect.
Doc Horton, an O. A. C. student and former employee of A. T. Hill drug store, passed through the city today while traveling to Burns in Oregon.

Light drizzling showers spread over Union county and the entire Grande Ronde valley forenoon. The rain aided dying grains and hay and allowed harvesting to begin without serious delays. Farmers report the soaking is better than nothing and expect some improvement in yields.
The trial of Lee O Neill Browne charged with bribery in Lorimer's election will begin August 1. Judge Hersten will preside and the case will move from Judge McSurley’s court after a recent grand jury disagreement.
Rome July 20 Harment the aviator is dying after a morning aeroplane accident. His machine was disabled while flying high and he dropped. Physicians say he has no chance for recovery.
