A naturalist traveling in the East Indies notes that monkeys react to humans with nearly human emotion. They stare, cough, snarl with anger, throw a band, and gesture about in shock and outrage, conveying horror at mankind. The observer remarks that these reactions underscore the monkeys as degraded cousins reacting to human superiority.
Fraser highlanders argued against changing dress for Atlantic winters and summers. Officers opposed the measure and cited Highlanders as the healthiest troops. In Holland 1704 some regiments lost many to disease, but the Black Watch with 300 recruits suffered only 25 casualties, including killed in action.

The Pacific Express Company announces its voluntary cessation of express and forwarding operations in Oregon.
