Wisconsin Senator La Follette assails Canadian reciprocity and President Taft on the Senate floor. He accuses Taft of betraying Roosevelt policies and serving big interests, calling reciprocity a grievous half century wrong and urging justice against entrenched power.
In All Hallows Barking London a bronze tablet memory of Pennsylvania founder William Penn was unveiled by the Pennsylvania Society of New York City. Dr Robinson presided and Ambassador Whitelaw Reid gave the main address before English and American guests. Costs were largely borne by former Senator W A Clark of Montana.
Cargell G. Pearse of Milwaukee leads a split in the nominating committee with 27 votes, while A. B. Winship of Boston secures 29 as the so called old guard candidate. Durand Springer, the treasurer, has 24 votes to 2 for Katherine Bevereatx Blake.
New York telegrams report financier John W. Gates died in Paris today though business circles have not confirmed the event. Dispatches from Paris say nothing definite on the cause or details of the death.
August J. Stange of Morrill Wisconsin lumberman became a strong ally of the Commercial club after witnessing an aviation meet. He noted locals stood outside paying to support the event while businessmen funded the guarantee and he contributed ten dollars himself. Stange called the flight exceptionally fine and thanked the club for arranging the meet promising lifelong friendship.
The Grande Ronde chautauqua draws large crowds as nearly 1000 attend nightly and Miss Willmer reads The Woman of Samaria after the Sadler company lectures. The program also features a girls field day in La Grande and a Saturday night health program on the war on flies.
In New York on July 12 a heat surged price spikes triggered riots. About a hundred men and women stormed the Foster-Scott office demanding ice and the manager issued tickets for ice at the company pier.
Forest fires in Porcupine district Ontario Canada and in Water village Grayling Michigan have killed hundreds and left thousands homeless. Mines in Porcupine districts were ruined and hundreds of homes burned. A druggist named Joseph Gardiner aided evacuees as foreigners attacked boats.
Chester Butcher paid 81.40 after a July 4 mistreatment of a horse on Grandy avenue. He was arrested by Officer Faulk at the creek canyon near Kamela, tried, found guilty, and jailed when he could not pay. Judge Williams imposed the sentence urging others not to mistreat horses.
Boston financier Thomas W. Lawson spent his vacation at Thomas Sharp’s home when a black bear chased him up a tree by a creek. Sharp found Lawson on a limb after the bear guarded him. the bear was driven off and Lawson was rescued.
Atlanta July 13 report that Governor Hoke Smith, elected United States senator, may decline the senate seat due to turmoil from leaving the governorship, a possibility discussed amid political maneuvering.
Six hundred fifty postal banks are now operating with fifty post offices adding savings departments today. By July 24 one thousand banks will be in operation, as the postal savings program expands across Washington.
Atlantic City July 18 thousands of Elks from across the United States Canada Hawaii Porto Rico and other distant places joined a grand parade as part of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks reunion. A dozen divisions with bands floats and a reviewing stand highlighted the event with New York Lodge No. 1 taking place of honor among state lodges.
In Rainier a $1000 reward is posted for the capture of the killer of Archie Coble and his wife, with Arthur Pierce, a half witted man arrested at Tenino, under intense sheriff pursuit after he behaved erratically and imperiledly denied or claimed Rainier presence.

Washington July 13 The committee on the agricultural department probes report Dr. Harvey L Wiley chief chemist may resign along with assistant W D Bigelow after alleged secret arrangements with Dr A H Rusby head of the New York college of pharmacy Rusby received 1600 yearly for up to eighty days of service taft weighing illegal combination claims and possible removal of Wiley.
