In Vancouver Washington District of Columbia on July 19 three children drowned after wading too deep. A medical man tried to assist but also drowned. Two girls later died, two others were resuscitated after great difficulty.
Vancouver July 13 local Chinese threaten a boycott of Canadian goods similar to actions against the United States and Japan. The group comprises 18 guilds and claims influence. If Ottawa’s anti opium bill passes, the largest opium factory west of China in British Columbia would be closed.

Portland July 13 The Portland Commercial club will host an Oregon Good Roads Conference on August 11 at its convention hall with a practical program. State officials and dairy, banking, and railroad interests back better highways and colonist rates. San Francisco July 13 detectives sweep the city to locate the unknown sailor tossed from the cruiser West Virginia during a fight with a marine. The sailor swam, but the marine drowned in the bay.
Acting under imperial orders Marquis Katsura reorganizes the cabinet after its resignation. He expects the new government will soon be in working order.

In London on July 13 the first heat of the 1500 meters was won by J. Sullivan of the Irish American Athletic Club New York with 4 07 5. Lightbody of the Chicago Athletic Club placed second Meadows of Canada third. Melville Shephard of the Irish American team won the second heat in 4 05 and set a men’s record 2 06 faster than Lightbody’s 1906 mark. J P Halstead of New York was second with Butterfield of England third. Butter of England won the first 400 meter swim heat in 6 48 while Lastores of Hungary took second and Goodwin of New York third. Foster of England won the second 400 meter race heat in 50 45 seconds.
Trunks for Warship Washington July 11 reports that by order of the navy department the battleship Minteippl will have her final trial off Newport Rhode Island tomorrow.
Attorney J. D. Slater came back from Denver where he served as Alternate Delegate to the national Democratic convention. He reports enthusiasm for the ticket with Parker and Bryan’s support, notes platform debates over the injunction plank, and predicts stronger party harmony and improved chances against Taft. Mitchall requests his name be kept off the ticket, aiming to back labor but still support the ticket.
A Paris cold storage center opened under French government patronage. Specialists from Great Britain, the United States, France, Germany and Romania attend the congress. The United States is recognized as leader in applying cold storage to food preservation and its experts receive honors on the program.
